What gearbox oil ????? Sreiously ????
What gearbox oil ????? Sreiously ????
Good Day Guys,
I have a simple yet seemingly unanswerable question. My son and I are finishing his 1970 restoration. I installed new double seals for the gearbox shaft to pitman arm due to leaks. The gearbox was dry with what appears to have been grease. I cannot get a repetative answer on what to put in the gearbox. My shop manual from high school ( late 70's) mentions grease for
a manual box and only gives a GM number for power steering ( which is what we have ). I took the GM numbers to a dealer and one number GM1051052 is no longer on their database. The other number GM4673M claims to be a "type" of power steering fluid. A mechanic at the dealer says he puts power sterring fluid in his 1969. I have read through searches to install a 1200w tractor gearbox grease. Have also read to fill the bottom with grease and top off witrh power steering fluid. You do this so that the power steering fluid wont get past the grease and leak out the bottom seals. Have also read to use 80w90 wt. gear oil. I can believe just powewr steering fluid would run out but just grease would not stay on the gears. O' Reillys did a cross referance on the GM number ( 1051052 ) and said it was power steering fluid. I have worked in an engineering lab for 30 years and have never ran across anything so ridiculous. I believe many years ago I put 80w90 gear oil in my 1973 vette but I am not 100%. Please excuse this for being long winded but I needed you to understand the avenues I have taken for an answer but could not come up with anything concrete. I am very particular about my rebuilds and believe there is only one way to do things. Please help if you have any info, we most certainly would appreciate it. The car is almost done. Will send photos. Thanks, Ken
