Lately when turning sometimes when going very slowly and doing a circle I get this popping/ sliding noise.

I noticed on that thing Im not sure what its called, but its loacted under the timeing cover in the front of the engine which the steering column attaches to, and it has all the metal lines going to it and the two rods which connect to the two wheels. Anyways one of the rubber boots on one end seems to have some kind of oily substance on the bototm of it. I am thinking it is leaking, as the power steering fluid resevoir was down to below the dipstick on the cap. How much does it cost to get a new one? Any links thanks.

Is it possible to rebuild them and where could I get it done>?

The pump alone is a pita. I dont know about the rack and pinion.

I have a freind who replaced his, I think it was about $178. I think he got it at O'Reilly (Rack and Pinion) Verify that it's power steering fluid and not motor oil.

 

Well its hard to tell. If the power steering fluid resevoir goes low, where could it be going besides the rack? The rack seemed to make noise because the fluid level was very low, now that I filled it up it seems fine.

 

my car does this when the front tires get low on tread, it acts like my 4x4 truck with the hubs locked in.

New tires fixed it.

 

Track down your leak before throwing money at it. Possible leaks include:

power steering fluid reservoir & cap
P/S return line
P/S feed line to pump
P/S pump
Rack

Have you topped off your P/S fluid and watched for a drop in the fluid level? As stated above, the fluid could be from another source like oil or A/C system.

If it is the rack, it's a straight forward change and you can get a replacement rack for around $150.
