New Nittos have me all over the road!
New Nittos have me all over the road!
I believe this belongs in the suspension section. Car in sig. Had 265/40/18s on rear. Bought new Nitto nt555s in a 275/40/18 and now my car sways side to side when i hit bumps in the road considerably more than it did before. How can i fix this? These tires are great, they aren't too big, and they are on C5 thin spoke corvette wheels. Since they were put on i developed a squeak on the drivers side front which i believe was my sway bar bushings, got that solved. Now would a strut tower brace or a bigger front sway bar fix my swaying? I'm afraid to go too fast and bounce off the hwy. It's actually a chore to get it to track down the road. Sorely dissappointed right now but if there is a new part i can put on to fix it i'm all about that. Thanks
In your torque arm/pinion angle thread, you complained of a clunk in the right rear over a bump. That, plus the side-to-side lack of control may be pointing to a damaged bushing on that end of the Panhard rod.
Aligned in July. The clunk is the top of the new Torque arm hitting the body when the rearend shifts turning into a driveway or parking lot with an incline. I'm going back to stock height. Oh yea one more thing, i hate TX roads!
Did you check the ends of the Panhard rod? A loose bushing or damaged mount would allow the body to move sideways on a turn, and increase the possibility of the top of the TA hitting the body. The rearend isn't supposed to "shift" on a turn. The Panhard rod holds it in place.
Bushings good. I'm not talking about it shifting side to side. When i turn left into a inclined driveway the left side of the rear comes up while the right side drops and the TA bumps, you know body flex i guess is what it is. Not worried about it now that i know what it is. I'm pretty sure when i go back to stock i won't have the issue.
I know what you are saying, it's not body flex, just when the body is angled one way because of the front wheels being on a certain incline, and the rear axle drops down at an angle to keep both rear wheels planted
Nothing on the suspension parts before the trammeling started. My first thought was tire pressure and i checked them, they were at 33, filled them to 45 (51psi max) still no change. I did notice the strut bushing at the bottom is destroyed on the driver left and it's causing an awful creaking noise. Going with the KYB agx adjustables next week when i go back to stock height.
Well new shocks u front and sway bar bushings an it's still dam near impossible to keep it on the road at 75+ MPH. Very dissppointed. I'm gonna get the alignment checked but dont think that will make a bit of difference.
Sounds like there's a good chance it's your tires, but if your caster is set really low that might be it.
So, how much caster is in you alignment?
More caster will give you more straight line high speed stability. If your caster is already 5*or above you should be good. If it's less than 4* more caster should help.

I'm on duty right now but plan on taking it to the alignment place on wed or thur. I put a level on the front tires the other day and my right tire has a nice camber but the drivers side is straight up and down. Which might explain why my car stick like glue in a high speed right turn but trammles in a left (perhaps). No way to check the caster till i take it to the alignment place. I really hope it's the alignment. My neighbor has a 95 z28 he isn't driving right now so i'm gonna ask him if i can borrow his hotchkis STB to see how that works before i buy one after i do the alignment thing. I WILL keep everyone posted in hopes to help those in the future.
