Question Manual Steering

Why is it that the manual steering rack made by mad man racing is like $700 buck and a pinto rack from summit is like $300? Would a pinto rack fit?

Are there any other options for manual rack & pinion?

Thanks!

It would help to know what year camaro.
I'm guessing a 1993-1997?
As far as I know the pinto rack won't fit.
What you can do but it will cast you about the same as the mad man rack is to buy a BMR K-member for a pinto rack.
Then buy the Pinto rack or buy a reman from an autoparts store.
If you get the mad man rack you have to drill out the spindles to fit the tie rod ends on.
I would think you would not have to do that with the pinto rack.

Sorry, yeah, 94 Firebird....

I already have a BMR K-member.

Is the Madman the only 93-97 Manual R&P out there?

Thanks...

Re: Manual Steering

Because he welds mounts to the rack to allow use in a stock Fbody mounting style. The standard rack needs to use standard pinto mounts. I think his also includes steering shaft linkage, which is another ~100 bucks for good joints, and ofcourse the bumpsteer kit. Overall, I don't think its a steal to buy a standard setup, but it is a bit cheaper.

Re: Manual Steering

Why can't you just use the power steering rack without the pump?

Re: Manual Steering

Because the manual steering setups use a higher/slower ratio. Makes its easier to turn than a stock setup. A manual rack is much easier to turn than a stock rack with no power steering. Also, it defeats the purpose of saving weight.

Re: Manual Steering

It is only 6 lbs lighter. Could you use one of these to make it easier to turn?

Well I think your cheapest way would be to call BMR up and see if they will sell you the mounting tabs for the pinto R&P.
Get a re man rack and your done with it.
I re man rack at auto zone is like 160 bucks.
With a life time warranty too.
Have somebody weld the mounting tabs on and your done.
Probably for less than half of the Mad Man rack.

Re: Manual Steering

Keep in mind that using stock mounts keeps your options open. I thought I wanted a drag car but decided that was the wrong direction. I had already bought a BMR pinto mount Kmember after I decided that a manual rack was too much for my tastes. Just my .02 .
