Fuel Cell Location??

Did some looking and couldn't find too much on this topic. I'm looking into getting a fuel cell for my 88 Camaro and not sure of a mounting location. Car will be a street/strip car & I will be having a cage done in the future soon. I was thinking of putting it right on the hump in the hatch area. Thanks

Re: Fuel Cell Location??

You mean outside the passenger compartment, under the "package shelf" (hump) where the stock tank was located? If you do that, how will you fill it? You would need a sealed/gasketed door in the body sheet metal to isolate the fuel tank from the passenger compartment. They are available ready made form Alston, or one of the other chassis specialists.

An alternative is to put it in the base of the hatch well, and add a "firewall" to separate it from the passenger compartment. Wolfe makes a pretty cheap looking firewall for the 4th Gens that doesn't look very functional, but apparently satisfies tech at the track.

Well, bascially I was looking to put it in the hatch well but was looking for a way to have it closed in like those bulkhead's for the 4th gen. Do they make a bulkhead for the 3rd gen or are people just modifing the ones for the 4th?

Fred, I have to disagree with your assessment. I have one of the Wolfe bulkheads in my race car and I found it to be a very well engineered piece of equipment that when installed, does exactly what it is designed to do, isolate the driver's compartment from the fuel cell. Here are a couple of shots of it installed. Click on the thumbnails for a larger pic.

So can I use that bulkhead in my 3rd gen. with a little modifying?

Re: Fuel Cell Location??

I've seen the Wolfe close up... what seals the metal to the side panels? .... to the hatch lid? I don't even see a gasket between the bolted base and the floor. To me, a bulkhead is intended to prevent fuel from flowing into the passenger compartment - it should be "liquid-tight" - and I can't quite see how the Wolfe one does it. It apparently satisfies NHRA.... but I personally wouldn't rely on it - hence my comment.

The cells I've seen are deep in the hatch well, with a true, SEALED bulkhead installed..... gasketed, caulked and with numerous rivets or bolts to keep the bulkhead sealed to the chassis, and a sealed/gasketed door to access the fill cap.
