Do you think this is the problem????

I have a 96 z28 LT1 and my steering wheel seems to be really loose, like I can go 2" in both left/right directions before the wheels will turn, like there's alot of slack. Do you think it's the steering knuckle? Joint? that couldve went out from being so worn and it has alot of play in it? Thanks for info, also are there any aftermarket things, my steering isn't tight at all.

Most likely the rack and pinion wore out. Mine is like that too. If you end up replacing the rack and pinion I can help you with how to do it.

Other than that, look in the engine bay. You can see the knuckles, and steering joints on the drivers side there.

Yea I just put a new engine in but wondered if it was the rack and pinion or the steering knuckle. Knuckle looks pretty old though. How much will a new rack and pinion usually run?

Look at the steering while someone wiggles the slack in the wheel back and forth. Then ya can tell if it's tie rod ends(joint with slack at the wheels) or the rack if ya don't see anything moving in a strange way it's the rack.
