Crap..... I gotta problem
Crap..... I gotta problem
Allright, I've gotta problem with my rear drums on my '86, well actually 2 problems, but whatever. Anyways, I was doing a routine thing on my car, changing the rear shoes, something I've done plenty of times, but never on this car. Well I took everything apart, and then I went to put it back together. Well, I can't seem to get the parking brake line into the parking brake lever. No matter how hard I try, I can't get it to go in. Any tips?
Secondly, as I was doing this, a new shift **** I bought came from UPS. Well I stopped what I was doing and go put it in my car. I liked it and I was just moving it around for a second. Well, I wasn't thinking and I pressed the barke pedal, after I did it twice, I realize what I did. I lookd out back and I was like oh crap! The plug or whatever for the wheel cylinder had blown out and fluid was all over. I waited like 5 minutes and the fluid was still coming. I tried putting it back in and I couldn't. My question is, first of all how do I get the plug or whatever back in? Second of all, did I do any damage? Third of all, is there anything I might need to go fix somewhere else in the brake system becasue of this?
-Thanks

Re: Crap..... I gotta problem
If you touched your brakes with the drums off, you blew out the wheel cylinders. You will have to reassemble them, fill with fluid and bleed. You might need the assistance of a manual if you don't know where all the parts go.
Re: Crap..... I gotta problem
Alrgiht wtf! I bought a new wheel cylinder from my local Napa, and I pulled my old one off. Well I put the new one in place, started threading the brake line in a little, and then went to put the new clip on.
Well no matter how much fircken' force I put on the damn clip, it will not go in! Is there some special tool or some trick I can do to get this on!?!?!?
Please help.

Re: Crap..... I gotta problem
I know there are. I have all those tools. However, there's a small metal clip that hold the wheel cylinder in place. No matter what I can't seem to get it on!
Re: Crap..... I gotta problem
i have not seen this thread until now, and i love posting to 86' 350's threads,
i like to encourage him
the wheel cylinder can be reassembled easily, without removing them from the backing plate
but too late, oh well
since there are no shoes providing resistance, the plungers in the wheel cyllinder keep moving till they pop out
the same thing happens with the pistons in calipers, only no one presses on their brakes without the rotor and pads in place
since u let the fluid out for somne time it will take u a few bleeds to get pressure back
the clip you are refering too that holds the wheel cylinder in, pia to get out, i hated it, only because i dont have a tool to make it easy, but to put it back in, easy
u put the wheel cylinder in by hand, then take like the wooden handle from a mallet or whatever and put it between the axle flange and the wheel cylinder, just to hold it in place
then u use a socket to hammer on the clip (i forgot what size)
as for the drums, the shoes will break off any rust that may accumulate, it would be better to at least resurface them, if not replace them
and lastly
does this make you feel better shoebox?
lol
