Question 2 piece brakes

Can someone tell me what the benefit of 2 piece brakes are versus standard 1 piece? Thanks!

Re: 2 piece brakes

Never heard any called that before.

Do you mean dual piston disc brakes? They usually have more clamping power.

Re: 2 piece brakes

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant the 2 piece rotors, like these:

The "hat" can be made out of lighter weight materials than the rotor.

Oh, cool. So I assume the theory is that with less weight on the rotor, you have less rotating mass and therefore stop faster?

Somewhat, but that is also less heat they can take before transferring it to other parts of the brake system.

Re: 2 piece brakes

Two piece rotors reduce "unsprung weight" on the suspension. I believe reducing unsprung weight improves suspension response which would be a benefit for those auto-crossing, etc. But, for a street car, the biggest benefit is probably just that they look pretty cool.

And if they're on a track they're running higher temp rated pads that can take the higher heat.
