Thinking of moving to FLA...

Hello everyone. I am currently from Tulsa, OK. I moved here a few months ago from Boston, MA. I am thinking of moving to FLA, because I can't afford to live in Tulsa any more, because the job market is really bad out here. Just looking for some opinions from people who actually live in FLA to see what you guys think of it. Where is a good part to live? I am thinking orlando area, but not sure. What are taxes like? Do you guys have seat belt laws? How about Driving with fog lights off? Any stupid laws I should know about? I dont know anything about FLA, so please fill me in. Thanks.

I'm a FL native and I love it here, it would take a lot to get me to move out of the state.

I think a great place to live in FL is just outside any metropolitan area because it's not that congested, prices will be a little cheaper, you're close to the metro. area w/o having to live there, and traffic isn't bad.

I live in the Orlando area and I love it here. Orlando is a very clean, attractive, and evenly-populated city. Our only problem here is rush hour traffic.

I would assume the job market here is very strong because there's always companies that are hiring.

Orlando has a tax of 7 cents on the dollar, so it isn't too bad, and some surrounding areas have a 6.5 cent tax. There aren't any excise taxes here, so there's no tax on gas.

We have seat belt laws here and they're very strict that the DOT makes TV commercials to enforce them. You can drive with fog lights off here. It's not like Canada where you have to have DRLs.

There really aren't any stupid laws you should know about, but the first one that comes to mind is FL is an employment-at-will state, so if your boss doesn't like the way you part your hair, you're gone and there's very little you can do about it unless he broke the law.

FL is a great place to live, that's why so many people are moving here, if you want to know any more, just post your question.

our publik skools suck... till you get to college, then its not half bad.

toll roads are everywhere, don't expect to go many places on a highway unless you have 5 bucks in quarters.

Depends on what you do for a living. Here in East Central Florida we have the Cape and tons of government contracters, engineering firms and tech jobs.
Construction is huge here. Too much for me, but they call it progress. North Florida is nice and more rural.
But the biggie is we dont mind people moving here, but please accept Florida for what it is and dont try to change it to someplace else with nicer weather.
If you dont like 4x4s, girls in bikinis, alligators, fishing, boating, or any of the other things "yankees" complain about. Dont bother coming.
Nothing worse then hearing "well, where I come from......". Fill in your complaint .
Otherwise I've been here 33years. Almost all my life and I love it.

Is there a good local track? What area is good to move to? A city area with low crime, and JOBS. How do you think the track times will be compared to here in OK better or worse? Thanks.

Tampa is alright, I lived there for 2 yrs. during college. It's not as nice as Orlando is, though. If you're REALLY into the club scene, then move to Tampa for Ybor City. This place has like 20-30 clubs on one street and it's a great night spot. Tampa also has pro football, hockey, and baseball.

Tampa has more people than Orlando does, but the area is smaller than Orlando. Overall, the Tampa area has more of anything you're looking for than the Orlando area does and you're closer to the coast than if you're in Orlando.

Do a search on Orlando and Tampa on www.digitalcity.com

ok, ideally, I'm looking for somewhere with Jobs, decent weather (Not too hot and humid), somewhat near the beach. What do you guys think of the Daytona Beach area? I'm thinking of moving to Orlando to try and get jobs in Universal Studios or Disney world or something. Also, do you guys have any crazy laws? Is there a seatbelt law? Are you camaro guys pretty tight knit? Everyone here in OK knows everyone that has a camaro, and everyone here is willing to help you work on your car if you need it, and god knows I need help. Anyways, let me know anything you like/dont like about FLA, and what city you would move to, etc. I'm trying to get to know FLA. Vacationed there a few times, but don't know much else other than vacationing there.

There's not that many good paying jobs in the Daytona Beach area.

What line of work are you in? Let us know and we can probably steer you in the right direction to finding jobs here.

If you're looking for somewhere with Jobs, decent weather (Not too hot and humid), somewhat near the beach then move to Tampa, it will have all of the above.

As far as crazy and seatbelt laws, see my first post in this thread.

I feel that us F-Body guys in FL are pretty tight knit, I know a lot of other guys in my area and I've met a few at my school too.

In a nutshell, FL is a laid back state with a lot of retirees, a growing Latino population, low cost of living, many natural resources, has good outdoor activities, decent nightlife, decent pro sports teams, many car clubs, relatively low crime (depending on area), and it's a great state to grow up in.

I live in the Tampa area, and save for someplace like maui I wouldnt leave. You have everything you need in the immediate area. And if you get the itch you can easily drive to Orlando, nice beaches within an hours ride, and you can ride down to the keys and spend the weekend on very little notice.

You asked about close knit Camaro society, theres a group called Badrap that I am part of, that caters to all domestic performance cars, that do quite alot of things together.

I have lived in both Naples and Orlando. Naples is nice if your really laid back and have a good income job. Orlando is real nicebecause it has seasons. We get frost in the winter for a few days and we get into the 40's in the winter at times. I also like the natural springs you can swim in and we also have orlando speed world. It is a nice track. Then you have a 40 minute to 60 minute tops drive to Daytona Beach. Park your car o nteh beach and spend the day. It is great fun. North Florida is real cool too. I have family in Panama city. It is very quiet and did I say QUIET. It is nice if you are laid back and poor since it is cheaper than south florida. What is your age? What is your degree? Why are you looking for a change?

If you come to Pensacola, you will see mostly Navy guys, or older people, but the University of West Florida is here, and the University of South Alabama is about 40 minutes away, UWF has a good computer science program, there are great beaches in P'cola, Destin, and Panama City. I pretty much agree with what SFB767 said...as for jobs, well if you don't have a degree, well where I live you will be a bartender or waiter, but around this time of year, that is a good thing to get in to.

How about Emissions? Do you guys have emissions inspections on cars? What's that like? Yearly or what?

Do you guys have *** Communications cable there? I am trying to get into *** here in OK and hopefully transfer there. I don't have any degrees. I am 22, can do just about anything. I'd like to either get into repairing cars, or some kind of customer service or something.
