Thinking about a Honeymoon in the Keys, info needed
Re: Thinking about a Honeymoon in the Keys, info needed
sent you a pm but i havn't heard back.
did a quick search and found this site of some B&Bs in KW. i looked at the conch house which seems pretty nice, and rooms in the $150 range.
i looked at the Nassau House which has a bunch of honeymoon packages. check here. they seem to have a killer 5 nite package for just over $1100. and that includes a sunset cruise, some bubbly with roses and use of bikes for a couple days.
check out the knowles house too, they seem to have some decent packages with lots of amenities.
you can't go wrong with Key West. you have plenty of history and relaxing things to do during the day, nite life after dark, TONS of good restrants...and best of all....travel into Old Town a few blocks off the main roads and you're surrounded by old houses, tropical gardens and some peace and quiet.
when are you thinking of coming?

Re: Thinking about a Honeymoon in the Keys, info needed
Our honeymoon will be June 6th to around the 13th, so about 7 days is what we're aiming for. I think we may have already found what we're looking for. http://www.atlantishouse.com/ It's basically an addition on this person's house that they turned into a little honeymoon house. It's got two rooms, a master and garden room and is really freaking nice from the website. I wanted to know if you had heard of it?
We've pretty much all but decided not to do a cruise for our honeymoon, though we really want to do one in the next year or so. We both don't like being around tons of people, aren't big partiers and really want to have some peace and quiet to relax. A cruise is just too much for us on our honeymoon, I think we'll have a hard time relaxing. Plus the rooms are tiny and you have to push 2 twins together to get a queen bed, which just kinda sucks.
This Atlantis house I think will be perfect, as it's away from all the noise, but still only 5 minutes from Duval St. The best part is the Master Room is available for the dates we want, so I think we're going to book it if we don't find anything better in the next day or so. Plus they give discounts for 7+ days, so we'll do a minimum of 7 days to get that.
Thanks for the advise guys! I really do appreciate all the info on the cruises, I just don't think it's for us right now. We're pretty private people and the thought of being stuck on a boat with 2000+ people for our honeymoon just doesn't sound that great to either of us.

looks like a nice place, but with the probable 100+ B&Bs in Kw...it's not a surprise i havn't heard of it.
i think you'll enjoy KW. tourists are at a minimum due to the off season. so it should be nice for what you're looking for. not to mention the weather is best for getting on the water.
weather is pretty HOT..ok...VERY HOT by most standards. but it's a different type of hot than central fl. the sun is MUCH more intense so laying on the beach or walking out side is alot hotter. but the temps are moderated by the ocean around you. air temps in the summer are typically around 90, with a 5-10mph breeze. HOWEVER...with the humidity the heat index typically hits 115.
the key is to wear cool clothes, and slow down, stay out of the sun in the peak hours. alot of activities are best done in the morning and evenings.
someone mentioned diving i think. if you are interested in diving, let me know. i know a guy who runs a dive charter service. its a "dive where YOU want, HOW you want" deal...not like most shops. the price is a bit higher, but i'm sure i could track down some friends to fill the boat and make it affordable. if you want to snorkel, most of the shops will work. i suggest driving 30miles north of KW and diving off Big Pine Key...it's a better reef.
keep me in mind if you need any more help. i wrote down the location of that place...maybe i'll drop buy and check it out.

Ok, so we've got two places we like now. Center Court Historic Inn's and Cottages along with the Atlantis House. The Center Court one is on Center St(runs parallel to Duval)I believe, which is nice. The bad thing is it's not exactly walking distance to the beach like the Atlantis House is. But, the Center Court has a full kitchen and the Atlantis House doesn't, at least they don't mention one.
The one thing the lady from the Center Court place said is that Key West isn't really known for their beaches? WTF? It's Key West, I thought they were supposed to have really nice beaches? Is she just wierd, or is the water just clear(aka great for snorlking/diving) but the beaches are crappy? We'd like to be able to lay out on a nice beach and get a tan/relax. Would Key Largo be better for nice beaches?
We're still checking out the rest of the 98 B&B's so I'm sure we'll find more we like. It would be cool is there wsa some kind of comparison site that listed all the places and the amenities they have and all that. That's probably asking a little too much though.
Thanks for your help though Teke, I seriously really appreciate it! If you're in the area while we're down there I'll have to buy you dinner!

The beaches are smaller, but they are there. Take the trolley tour while you are there. Cheesy but you get to learn a lot about the island that you probably would never know.
Also, check out the butterfly thing ( on Duval St). That was kind of cool, and my daughter and wife loved it!

There are plenty of beaches in the Keys. I've never been to one on "Key West" though. Bahia Honda is where we usually go. It's just below Marathon. I like staying in Marathon, myself. It'not as busy as Key West but you have plenty of touristy things to do, good fishing, good beaches and I get to drop in on my old pal Jeff too. If you want to party though, you've gotta go "West".

not to get too "marine biological" on you...since that's my profession...but the very nature of the reefs in the keys makes the formation of natural beaches nearly impossible.
beaches form from the accumulation of sediment brought in by waves. having a barrier reef 4 miles offshore cuts the offshore waves down to a light chop (for the most part). thus the sand never accumulates.
there are 3 good beaches in the keys...all relatively small. Sombrero Beach in marathon, Bahia Honda beach in bahia honda, and Smather's Beach in KW.
the beach in KW isn't bad, the sand is fairly nice and they tend to keep it clean. it also has showers and bathrooms. although...it got MESSED UP by the hurricanes, not sure how it looks now. but by june it should be back to semi-normal.
you have to remember the keys are just million year old reefs, that are now high and dry. they are covered in mangroves. 99% of the keys shoreline is mangrove swamp.
that's a very common tourist mistake.
i'll have to look up which beach the Atlantic House is near, cause there is another beach that isn't kept up very well...they could mean that one.
