i need a good mechanic

i need the seal on the front of the axle replaced as well as possibly the seal on the tailshaft of the transmission replaced.

any recommendations on where to get this done?

my axle is leaking pretty bad now and its definantly not comming from the cover, and its being slung all over the bottom of the car by the driveshaft.

You need your pinion seal replaced? The tailshaft seal always has some slight seeping. I can help you out with that if needed. This is on the Camaro right?

Re: i need a good mechanic

yea, a 1999.

it was just seeping but now its leaking so bad that when i stopped after getting off the highway at a stoplight all you could smell was burning gear lube from where it has been slung onto the exhaust pipe. the entire bottom of the car seems to be covered -- good for rust prevention

i replaced the trans tailshaft seal 2 years ago but it never really fixed that leak, just slowed it. i figure since the driveshaft has to come out anyways then it'd be a good time to do that seal again as well.

i don't know much about doing the pinion seal other than it requires tools i don't have.

The one thing that sucks is that the rear will probly need to be taken completly apart. You could just pull the yoke off without anything else out but who knows if you will get the pinion nut tight enough or to tight upon reassembly. How much are you looking to spend. I just built the 12 bolt in my bosses chevelle.

Re: i need a good mechanic

the whole thing shouldn't need to be taken apart for just the seal. the guys on LS1tech said to take the driveshaft off and check for play so i'll do that tonight.

i'm a college student so i'm trying not to spend as much cash as possible, such as possibly going to a dealer.

Well, if you are lucky......unlike me then just taking the driveshaft out and popping off the pinion nut and pulling the yoke off will expose the seal but when you put it all back together there need to be a certain amount of preload on that crush bearing inside. Its usually anywhere from 14-19 inch pounds. But that is with no diff in the car. If you want I can help you do that, but no garantee on that. If it were me, I would try it that way before taking everything apart.....

Hell, what are you talking about, you collage students have allll the money

Re: i need a good mechanic

Check out Keliente's write-up over on LS1tech. Just one problem with it: she says to do the same thing that the tech who did mine did regarding replacing that pinion nut. Just doing it by feel will usually come out OK, but you could end up like me and have a rear end that howls like a bastard. All the time. It's louder than my LT's/ORY/Rumbler. But I've seen the same guy who did mine do about 3 or 4 pinion seals on Blazer's the exact same way (tighten pinion nut until it "feels right") with no differential noise whatsoever. Don't mean to scare you, just trying to give you some info.

I had the same seepage your car is experiencing and my differential didn't have to be taken apart.

Give Harrell & Beverly Transmissions in Sanford a call. I think their number is 407-321/2-8410. They're about 15 min. north of UCF via 417. These guys are good.

Re: i need a good mechanic

Give me a call I can hook you up. As far as tearing the differental down there is no need. I have replaced plenty of pinion seals. I am a GM Master certified and ASE master certified tech. That may mean nothing to you guys but I have experience to back it up ask anyone that knows me.
