Drum to disk swap

First off before I get locked or yelled at, I did a search and didn't come up with anything other than "change the rear end."

My buddy totalled his car(z28). Since I have drum brakes in the rear, what brake parts do I need to pull off to convert my drum rear to disk.(Calipers, rotors, backing plate???) I know it can be done, just how.

Then I can buy a posi and gears later.

I would think that you would need to change the master cylinder too. But I'm sure the original will still work. You just won't get the correct brake balance. The fronts will lock long before the rears will. A proprtioning valve might work too. The easiest way to go is to change the rear end. It seems like I remember hearing that either the housing or the axles are different lengths when you go from drum to disk. I'm also not sure if the LSD will go in the stock 'open diff' housing either.

This is why it is easier just to slap in the entire rear end.

Eric is the only person I know of that has done this. I'm sure he'll chime in sooner or later.

hehe hate to say it but jsut slap in an entire rear end....

When I trashed my rear it was easeir nadaomost cheaper just to slap in an lt1 rear end.

but your route, do a search at firebirdv6.com , I know a few pwoepl have done it.

The Master clylinder as far as I know is the exact same part number as a z28. There is a debate to use or not use a proportioning valve. I didn't use one, and I had no effects, except better braking then when I had drums...

Things you will need though...

-ebrake cables of a rear disc brake car
-brake lines, maybe custom made(entire lt1 rear end, botls right up no fabircation)
-I am 75% sure you need the disc brake backing plates, but not 100% sure
-I also think you might need the axleshafts

Actually I did hte work for you...

here is a small write up of what is needed...

http://www.camarov6.com/cgi-bin/ulti...c&f=2&t=002069

also here is a part kit to see the parts you need.

http://www.tacreationsusa.com/suspensi.htm

maybe you don't need to change the axle shafts...

BTW chuck...

that guy with the legends car(little midget looking thing with a motorcycle motor) that went to the autocrosses was at the drag strip last time I went I think he pulled a high 13, I was surprised he had enough gear to make it down the track
