head torque question???

ok so when i reinstalled my heads using felpro 1074 head gaskets and arp bolts i didn't use that lube or any sealant. i torqued the heads to 65 lbs in one step..i think i ****ed up.....what should i do? i heard that i should pull the bolts out one by one and use a thread sealant and torque to 80lbs...is this the right procedure? any suggestions are greatly appreciated should i just leave it or is that a bad idea....any help greatly appreciated....... also its not gonna hurt anything puling out the bolts 1 by 1 right?

My engine guy told me 65-70 with arp lube and 80 with oil. You should have definately used some sort of sealant on the bolts. Some of the bolts pass through coolant passages. Coolant will work its way up the treads and cause a leak.

ok so do i just pull them out 1 at a time and put the #2 stuff on it, then torque it back down and repeat the process or do i have to remove the bolts in a special order? im going to remove 1 bolt at a time seal the threads and torque it 30 ft lbs...once i have all the bolts sealed i will then tq to 45 lbs and then to 70....does this sound like an ok way to do it?

I'm not sure on that one but someone posted a replay to my stud torque post saying just pull one at a time.

I would say no. Reason being, they need to be torqued in order and in at least 3 stages leading up to final torque.

Question - can you do one at a time and have it work? Probably but how long will it last? Is it worth it? To me, no.

Why not start over and do it correctly with sealant? I did mine in the car (with LTs). It's not that bad.

Better question - Is there a reason NOT to go back and do it correctly?

Just my .02.

ok well i would really like to start over and do it again but my headgaskets were almost 50$ a piece...i really dont wanna blow another 100 bucks if i dont have to...i have the felpro 1074's are they reusable? my engine has never been started and is still on the stand......so if there re useable do i just take the bolts and coat the threads in thread sealant or oil? i hear people saying to use oil??? im really confused

Oil is not a sealant.

in the rebuild book for the lt1 it says put sealant on the threads if there isnt any and but some oil on the underside of the head of the bolt that comes in contact with the head as to reduce friction with torquing down the bolts.

my advice; get this book, if you don't already.

and yes oil is lub not a sealant

I think you can possibly get away with loosening all the bolts, then pull one bolt at a time to apply sealer. Follow up by torquing using the normal pattern/method.Make certain to not disturb the head while doing this.

Personally, I would just spend the $100 on new head gaskets and start over...it's too much of a pain in the butt to find out it didn't work once the engine is installed in the car...

Are you using the correct torque sequence? I ask because you didn't seem to know you needed sealer on these bolts.......
