Newb question here, but i was doing some work on my car last night with one of the back wheels off, and on the top back part of the fender, there was a stopper. I assume this is the "bumpstop"? What exactly do these do? I know that some people have issues with these things rubbing with aftermarket wheels. Thanks!

 

The bump stop is there to prevent the body/subframe from bottoming out on the axle housing. When that happens, in addition to damaging the body or axle housing, you can over compress the shocks and damage them.

This shows the modification required to prevent the inner portion of the wheel rim from catching on the projecting metal bracket for the jounce bumper (or bump stop).
