MAF bad?

OK, just got the car back together after doing a single plane conversion. I have everything hooked up, and the car cranks, but barely fires. It will fire if I hold the throttle down, and it will idle at like 1500 RPM’s belching tons of smoke out of the tailpipes. With the MAF disconnected, I got the car to run and idle. So with the car running on its own for like 5 minutes, I decided to plug in the MAF while it was running. Two seconds after I did this, the check engine light went out, and the car died. I had my laptop and scanning software hooked up, and the MAF was reading 486 GPS. Is this a sign that it’s dead?

Check your wiring harness, 486g/sec is about where the stock maf tables max out. You may have a short or a bad ground or something in the maf harness. Or you could be right and the maf could be screwed.

Looks like Im ordering a new MAF tomorrow. I just took it off the car, one of the resistors is ripped off between the two poles. Oh well, at least I know its that for sure. Where is everyone ordering their GM parts nowadays? I used to go through Dal, but he retired last year.

Have you checked the MAF harness connector for bent or damaged pins? Also check the pink wire to insure it has 12V when measured across the black/white wire in the connector. A broken pink wire is not an unusual problem on the 97's. You will get a reading like that with an open circuit. Have you checked it for codes?

Injuneer, I checked the connector harness and it looked fine, no broken pins or corrosion. At the time it wasn’t throwing any codes. I was going to further look into the harness and check for a broken wire, but that’s when I discovered the broken resistor between the two poles in the MAF. I will be ordering a new one today.

Car runs great with the new MAF. Now a new problem has risen. Every time I hit a decent bump, the car stumbles. I get home, and I have the car idling in the driveway. I go to check the MAF plug, and when I go to touch it, the car dies. Looks like I have a break in the wire by the connector. Anyone know where I can order a new MAF plug and connectors?

You mean the harness side of the connector and a few inches of wire? Get the part # for the pigtail off Shoebox's list and try a local parts source:

Ebay usually has them along with several other pigtails listed.

Jason? How do I get a hold of him? There are a few auctions on Ebay for MAF pigtails using factory wire and ends for like 10 bucks. Looks like I will be ordering one tomorrow.

Yessir, Fred is correct.

I should've been clearer on my post.
