taking baby steps to gain HP
Ok guys and gals i have done a lot of reading and a lot of thinking. so i took the advice of many people. so i bought myself some alum heads. i am sending them out to get ported and polished, flow chart to get the right cam. now what i want to know is the rest of the heads. i know that with a bigger cam the stock springs can't handle it. so i want to know whats a good spring company to look at? what is a good spring to get? can someone explain to me how the rate goes? and how does the lift work? and what should i look at as far as rocker arms? should i change my valves? remember this is an lt1 nothing crazy done to the block give me some good feed back! o yeah the goal is to get as close as i can to 400 hp in a 88 mazda rx7 with an lt1/t56!!
First, based on the heads, select a cam. Then ask the cam manufacturer what he recommends for supporting hardware. Putting together a complete cam setup, buying one part at a time is not that easy. I could tell you that PSI makes excellent springs, but they might not have the ones that are best for the cam you end up with.
Some background info might also help you get answers.....
-what car/year did your LT1 engine come out of? Was it a B-body, hence the need to buy aluminum heads?
-are you looking for 400 flywheel HP or 400 rear wheel HP?
-have you considered buying a complete head porting and cam package, so that the cam compliments the heads, and the valves/springs/retainers/etc. match the cam?

my lt1 was out of a caprice. rebuilt it bored 30 over all stock replacement stuff just arp head, main, and rod bolts. the heads are iron, i mean i have a great time with the lt1 in my car but i want to see more hp out of it with out getting an ls1. and i don't want my wife seeing me spend to much money at one shot. thats why if i can take baby steps she will not notice it to much. i am looking to get as close to 400 at the wheel. it doesn't have to be 400 to the dime. i would be happy with 380
i have thought about doing a whole head and cam setup but that 2000 i don't want to shell out at one shot.
