Question MSD 8.5 or Magnecor 8.5 Spak Plug Wires?

Just picked up a 97 6spd Z a couple weeks ago (my 4th 4th gen)

bone stock except a flowmaster muffler and K&N, with 129kmi in need of a good tune up, running what looks like to be the original 7mm Delco plug wires.

For plugs I'm going to try the ACdelco Rapid Fire Platinum's
http://www.acdelco.com/parts/sparkpl...e-platinum.jsp

I've always used Rapid Fires in all my L98 F-bods and Vettes, with good results and haven't in an LT1 yet. Anyone using these?

I've used the MSD 8.5's in my 95 T/A, no problems except the fatness of the wires made them harder to route through the opti, but I see they have gone up in price(about $97 now) and http://www.lingenfelter.com/store/85143.html has the Magnecors for about $17 less.

What do you guys think?

I think the Magnecors are a better piece. But, I'm biased as I am using the 10.5 Magnecors.

the Magnecores are cheaper than the MSD's, well that's a no brainer then. Make sure you get the 90* boots and not the ones in the pic.

I've got the MSDs on my motor and I'm happy with them, just take you time when routing them. I have never heard of the Magnecors before so I don't know what to tell you there. Also alot of people are having issues with the tip coming off of the Delco plugs. I'm running NGK TR55s gapped at .035 in my motor without any issues so far, also had autolites and they fouled after 50 miles

I had a spare set of MSD's laying around but I'm not sure I'm going to be buying another set...I changed my plugs this w/e, I had the AC delco platniums...I'll post a thread on what they looked like this evening after 60k miles, and that was after removing them and cleaning them at 20k miles.
Anyway, the boot on #6 which is right under the center exh primaries was basically cooked on to the plug, the boot cracked all apart when I finally got it removed and its a good 1" from the exh tube. I thought MSD could withstand the temps there....but maybe the fouled plugs had something to do with that if the gas was burning in the exhaust instead of in the cylinder... Lucky I had a spare set laying around to use.... I've never had a boot get that cooked before, even on my turbo cars that have alot hotter temps.

I haven't had any issues with my Autolites. You may have had too cold of a plug.

I recently removed a low mileage set of Magnacors form my engine due to multiple wire problems and misses. They are easier to install than the MSDs due to their more pliable material, but I don't think they held up very well. I was a bit disappointed. They fit the oem harness holders around the opti very well.

I installed a set of MSDs and hope they last longer. I have had good results from MSD wires and their products in general over the years in many different applications.

I alwys get the unterminated wire sets and run them the way I want them. Brand is not too important to me - they all buy them from the same Chinese factory anyway.

Yes, the uncut ones are the ultimate version for an exactly-way-you-want-it-to-fit custom install. I am an old geezer and recall that in the 60's when I did plug wires, the uncut version was the only option. I can't recall when presized kits were available, I think the mid 70's. Now you need to look to find the uncut sets.

They were the stock heat range just like the TR55s

The boots on 90% of the plug wires can't handle extreme temps. If you have the boots too close to the primary they will melt and crack. And the plugs will look like crap if they weren't firing because of the melted wire

Now that I remeber that happened to my T/A as well, luckily MSD sent me a new one. I think I might be leaning towards the magnecors this time mainly because they are cheaper.

MSD. Summit had a test display at their store a while ago showing them as being the best out of their top competitors.
