Would a Scat 9000 series or Eagle non-twist cast steel crank be alright for a 383 w/ 11.5 compression? Estimate 600 fwhp on a alittle nitrous, at the most 150..? Any info would help.. Thanks

 

Those Chinese castings work great right up to the point that they break in half. Normally at that point it’s time for a new engine, sometimes if you’re lucky you can save the block. At 600 HP, I’d choose a good forged piece.

 

Just say no to cheap cranks!

I would not dare to push that much on a cast crank.

 

A lot of this depends on the rest of the parts and the bottom end. If you have a good block, lighter rods and pistons and assemble everything well a cast steel crank can take more of a beating than a stock crank.

say if the origional poster was to do forged pistons, forged rods, and a cast steel crank....he would be safe to do what he wants, correct?

 

Over the last couple of years I have seen three of the overseas cast cranks break in half in a great running engine. All were using light weight pistons and in the 550 to 600 HP range.

Under 500 HP, no worry. Over 500 HP it's a crap shoot, it might last a year maybe two, but when it breaks it's not pretty.

 

Not me, no way. For a mild build, OK (politics aside). In spite of what you read on the 'net, a 600hp smallblock is far from a mild build.

Why not just get a forged crank? I just put an Eagle light weight Forged crank and rods in mine. It hopefully will be a 550 hp motor and the forged crank will hold up just fine for that power level. I know the Eagle stuff is China made but I went with them anyway. Reasonably priced and will get the job done.

I dont think a cast crank in a 600hp nitrous motor would be a good idea either. No matter what brand.

 

If I went with a Scat 9000 pro comp cast steel crank, Scat stock replacement 4140 forged I beam rods, 4 bolt conversion and Mahle Forged pistons would it be ok to run on a 355 turning 6800 rpms and 430 n/a rwhp and 500 n20 rwhp? Or is it a must to go Scat Forged Crank? This also is a street car, and not gonna see nitrous weekly..

 

As Rich said 600hp is one thing and should use a forged crank, for what you are asking NA it's doable but with N2O anything can break.

Detonation, and heavy parts with RPM are going to kill a bottom end faster than anything.

Why in the world would you spend that much on the parts you've listed, making sure to get forged everything else, and NOT get a forged crank? Is there some voodoo reason your not fessing up to here? Put a solid crank in there and spray the crap out of it. Scat makes a very nice forged 4340 piece that will hold 600HP all day. I've got one spinning around in my stroker now with zero issues.

Why take the chance?????
