Symptom:

First, the car would backfire or otherwise run poorly at high RPM (5600- 5900) at WOT until I let off. Only did it every once in a while .

After a "soaking" day long rain, my car won't start. Happened 3 days ago first. Let the car sit for a day (it finally quit raining) and then it started okay, but didn't act quite right for a bit. Maybe partly flooded from before. I put new plug wires in the car and it seemed fine.

Did it again this morning, it rained all last night.

I've searched on here for wet weather problems and it sounds like it is one of the following:
1) Bad coil
2) Bad coil wire
3) other corroded connections to the Opti
4) Bad opti unit.

But if you throw in the added problem of the high RPM backfiring, which is the most likely problem??

Car is a 95 T/A M6 with 59K.

I've had a water soaked opti that acted that way, but my old '95 Z had the same problem, and it turned out to be a bad coil. The coil is definately cheaper and easier to try first.

you can check that coil to see if it works. simply unhook the lead power wire to your opti from the coil and hold it to the block and have some one turn it over. if it sparks then it works.

what happend to your car is happens all the time. your opti got wet and might be broken for good. by let it dry for a day or two and see what happens. it may dry and all will be well.

 

It seems strange that the opti would have picked this period of time to get wet. I have driven the car in all kinds of rain, and it has sat outside for the last 6 months with no problems. Before that it was a garage kept car.

Seems strange that it could get wet while not in motion. The engine looks dry. Even if I put a new opti in, it could still get wet, right? Again, it seems strange that it happened now and never before.

But hey, I'll try anything. Hate driving the beater to work.

I'll try testing the coil when I get a chance. And put the new coil wire on, too. :big grin: Didn't think they had one. Was wondering why I got that "extra" wire!
