$650 for the Fuel Pump?!

I took my car in to the shop yesterday and they told me it would be $650 to replace the fuel pump. Does that sound right? Anybody else have this done?

That is about what I paid to have it done on my 88 IROC.
Never again.
Do it yourself and save the money.

Installing a fuel pump in our cars is a royal PITA, if it's done the right way. It sounds like a lot but you might understand why if you try to do it yourself.

Doing it the right way takes time, it's not a hard job to do, just time consuming.
A lot of people just cut a rectangle on the inside of the car to gain access to the top of the fuel tank. I personally wouldn't do that.

Ditto.

Like Zepher said - Its time comsuming. If repair shops charged by the difficulty level, they'd make less money .

Pumps are around $100 and I was quoted $200 for labor, so I would advice not giving them your money.

I believe it only cost me about $303 for my mechanic to put in my new OEM one. If i could go back, i would've gone with the Walbro 255, o well!

when I went looking I was quoted prices from $700-$900. The GM part itself that everyone wants to use is almost $300. I bought a Walboro, took a weekend to install it myself and never looked back (I did not cut a hole in my trunk either)

I was out of town when the fuel pump went out in my Formula. No tools, no place to work on it. Anyway, it cost me $600 to get it replaced.

The dealer is going to charge a high shop rate and it is a time consuming job because they have to drop the rear end and gas tank. That's why the quote was so high.
There is nothing wrong with cutting an access hole to replace it without dropping the tank IMO, as long as you do a nice job of closing it back up. There is are online guides for how to do it here and here.
