Wetsanding

How do i wetsand my paint to smooth out some of the stone chips on my front? I have a ton of sandpaper from various projects. I was thinking that I should use some of my 1000grit sand while it is wet and just run it over my front bumper a little. I, however am worried that i will destroy my paint. Is this safe to do?

Re: Wetsanding

Ok, I have been a bodyman for over 15 years. If there are chips in the paint, You can not just wetsand them out. More then likely the chips have removed the clearcoat and maybe even some of the basecoat. The only good way of fixing it is sanding the whole cover down and repainting it. I know thats not what you wanted to hear. Other suggestions depends on the color of your car. If it is a solid color, You may get away with just touching up the spots and then letting them dry. Make sure you fill the chip enough with paint as you may have to touch it up more then once after letting the first touch up dry. This all depends on how big the chips are. After filling them you can wetsand the spots you touched up with 1000 grit and then buff them out. If it is a metallic color. You will just have to touch them up. You can try the method I mentioned above but metallics tend to lay different when they are touched up. Hope this helps you out.
