Talking The truth about Towels...

OK guys, I always thought that I had the perfect towels. They looked to be 100% cotton, all white, perfect terry cloth towels. Boy was I wrong. I've fought a long, hard battle with swirls in my car for the last three years, on all different cars. I didn't know what was causing them, and I was determined it wasn't the towels! I'd put numerous coats of Z5 on the car with absolutely no results...

I purchased some Fieldcrest/Cannon Charisma bath towels last week, and my swirl problem has been resolved. 'Nuff said.

Point is: if you have swirl marks and have tried everything to get rid of them (Or your Z5 isn't working) it's your towels!

The look alikes won't work.

You're absolutely right! I've been using Royal Velvets now for a few years and I'll never use anything else on my paint. It's really a shame that some people spend a fortune on Zaino or ANY wax system only to create a mass of swirls using the cheapest buffing towels they can find at AutoZone or WalMart etc... Towels DO make a big difference in end results.

I remember back when I was 14 or 15, and didn't know any better, I used to use t-shirts and the cheap terry towels in packs for waxing. Not all 100% cotton is created equal....

KevinSS, the moderator here sells them too. He removes the stiching, cuts them to the size you want and resews the edges with cotton thread.

Here's some more interesting info........

Cannon & Fieldcrest make a lower quality version of their towels for
K-Mart, Walmart and other big discount chains.

These towels say 100% Cotton but that is not, totally true. The nap is
100% cotton but the backing material has polyester blend in it.

So if you press a little to hard on the towel you can get some fine
scratches or swirls.

The point I'm trying to make is if a Cannon or Fieldcrest towel is
selling in a discount store for $6.00 or less (approximately) it is not
the good stuff.

I buy all my Cannon & Fieldcrest towels in the Bath & Linen shops in
the bigger stores in the mall. I pay anywhere from $10 to $20 per towel.
These are the real deal. I buy about 3 or 4 towels and they usually last
me about a year.

Now for you guys that may have already purchased the lower price towels.
Look carefully at your paint finish when you are using your towels. If
you are not getting any swirls or fine scratches, then you are okay.
Remember it's better to be safe than swirly.

Another problem I'm seeing is some of you guys are using powdered
detergent to wash your towels. Powdered detergents contain granules that
do not fully dissolve in the wash cycle and get trapped in the nap of
the towels, these granules will scratch your paint finish.... Only use
Liquid detergents like All or Tide. Also do not use Bleach or any kind
of fabric softner.

You must use only white. Not colored towels.....Colored towels are not
to be used because the dye leaves a chemical residue on the paint
finish. Always wash your towels first before using. Use Liquid detergent
and rinse twice.

You should cut the selvages(borders) off the perimeter of the towels.
This selvage contains nylon and polyester stitching that could possibly
scratch your paint finish. The towels will fray a little once this is
done. But it's better to play it safe.

Drying the towels on high heat will make them hold a static charge. I
use the regular heat setting and remove them a little damp and let them
air dry. You can fluff the towel real good when it's dry to make it
softer.

As the towels get older they will lose there nap and absorbency and will
have to be replaced.

Hope this ends any confusion...

Sorry for being so **** about this. But I want you guys to always have a
flawless, perfect paint finish.

Sal Zaino

I get my Royal Velvets from Goldsmith's in a local mall. Some upper end retailers carry these high quality towels (RVs and Charismas), so just check around if you want to buy them locally without internet ordering. Just don't buy from WalMart, Kmart, Target, or any other "discount" store.

If you want custom cut, custom sized, and custom finished edges, I am the guy, here is my towel info:

I have two kinds of towels, both white color only, edges removed and re sewn on a
special machine called a serger with all cotton thread to prevent ravel. I have
Fieldcrest Royal Velvet and Fieldcrest Charisma, the Royal Velvets are great but the
Charismas are heavier and softer.

My standard towels come in a pack of 2 sized 20 inches by 28 inches approx., one
pack of Royal Velvet is 15.00 and one pack of Charismas are 18.00. I can do special
orders, full sized towels, 2 to a pack, or 4 to a pack(each pack contains the same
amount of toweling, just cut different)

Hey KevinSS
I bought my Fieldcrest from (Bath N Beyond). They're large, white, and very thick heavy towels. But it did not specify if it was Royal Velvet or Charisma? I paid $30+ for two towels! I just don't want to be using the wrong towels. Any oppinion on this would be appreciated.

Just a heads up guys, you can get the better quality Cannon towels at a place called Kohl's. I used to work at the place, and I worked in domestics. They are very nice towels. When I was working there I bought a boat load of them. I got them for about 50% off the regular price. So, if you have a Kohl's in your area, you might want to check them out.

Tell me if these are the real cannon towels, I bought these towels at kohls, I think they were around 5.99 each, on the tag it says cannon royal family and has a picture of a little war cannon, and on the back says fieldcrest cannon, inc. Kannapolis, N.C., made in USA. So are these the good quality towels.
