Need help removing stripe adhesive!
Need help removing stripe adhesive!
I'm in the process of replacing my factory stripes and NOTHING is helping get the adhesive off. I've tried Goof Off, Goo Gone, Oops, 3M Adhesive & Wax remover, nail polish remover, WD40, etc. All of it does absolutely nothing to the adhesive...has the exact same effect as water. What the hell is this stuff made of and aside from a belt sander, what will take it off???
Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
Might have to carefully heat it up with a heat gun or a hair drier. WD-40 and rubbing alcohol worked for me though. Might want to try bug and tar remover if that doesnt work. And are you letting it soak in or spraying it on and wipeing it off?
Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
Thanks for the replies guys...to answer the question about letting it soak in, I've actually done both. With each product, I've first sprayed it on a rag and then rubbed the spot I'm working on, then (after that does absolutely nothing) I spray a good bit directly onto the adhesive and let it sit for 3-5 minutes and then try rubbing it off with the rag. Still has no effect....it's weird. The adhesive feels almost like polyurethane or plastic....it's kinda yellowish in color and is simply impervious to everything I've put on it. It's like water on a duck's back...
Gonna try calling SLP today and see if they can help (they put 'em on, hopefully they'll know how to get 'em off).
Oh, BTW, one of the products I've tried so far is called 3M Wax and Adhesive Remover....is that what you are referring to? Says it removes most adhesives, waxes, and silicone but does absolutely NOTHING to the residue left behind by the OEM stripes. Only thing that's made a dent so far is my thumbnail, but there has to be a better way.
Thanks for the help and please keep the suggestions coming....I'll try just about anything at this point.

Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
Ive seen a process before, i believe the guy made the area with adheasive wet, and then used a heat gun and it shrunk up and was able to be pulled right off, or actually just slid off with a rag, there was some resadue left beind but im sure wd or that godly product goo-b-gone should be able to take care of that
Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
If it's yellow and thick and hard it's GLUE and not just adheasive. It sounds like the 3M weatherstripping glue. That stuff is NASTY to try and get off. You pretty much have to scrape it off.
Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
That's exactly what it is.....I finally found a solution though. Eastwood Company sells a "Vinyl Eraser Wheel" that you put on the end of a drill and it takes if off easily without damaging the paint. Much better than a belt sander, which was becoming a consideration
Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
When I worked at the body shop, my boss trained me to use laquer thinner to remove stuff like that, but you have to be very careful. And when your done, your gonna need to buff and wax the paint to make it shine again... AGAIN::::::BE CAREFULL, let it sit too long...bye bye paint...

Re: Need help removing stripe adhesive!
Actually, it works great and has not damaged the paint one bit. I guess it could overheat the paint and leave some discoloration if you ran it full blast in one spot for a while but as long as you keep it moving and at a reasonable RPM it does great. Couldn't be happier with this product....
