The engine compartment needs to have the dust and dirt removed. Any ideas so that it will run after the hose job?

Simple Green works very good for cleaning up heavy dirt and grime, but it is completely safe for metals and hoses. I use it in the engine bay and on my wheels with good results. Be sure to cover up the alternator and distributor...

Can you rinse the whole motor off with a hose or will that affect the sensors and other electrical parts?

When I Simple Greened my car i sprayed i on liberally and just rinsed the whole engine with a fine stream of water. Do not use excessive pressure at all.

You do not want to get water around the OptiSpark especially because you have a non vented opti (venting I think started in 96, or at least it did on my 96 SS B body)
