There used to be a guy in the '50s, '60s, or '70s who was famous for painting any car any color for $30, but he wouldn't do a bit of prep work. He would spend about 15 minutes painting the car with one coat and say "where's my $30?"

That was Earl Scheib.........a freind of mine had his car painted there in the late 70's...........they missed the strip under his rear bumper. He complained and they gave him a pint can of paint and sent him on his way. True story.
By the way, it was $29.95 not $30

One of my first jobs when I was 18 was sanding cars for Earl Scheib. Prep was a light rough-up sanding and masking tape.
