Cracked Clearcoat options

I got a 93 Z28 from my brother and this car was really neglected, the clearcoat has cracked and I was wondering what I could do to stop it from continuing any farther or to make it look better. I intend to paint th car over but in the meantime I would like to do something. I was thinking of using a really fine grit sand paper and just lightly wet-sand the problem areas and see if that works. All opinions and suggestions are welcome.

The only thing you can do at this point is always keep a fresh coat of wax/sealant on it. Direct sunlight will only make it worse.

Re: Cracked Clearcoat options

My hood is realy bad on my 93 too. I just came to this board to see if anyone has tried wet sanding or what ever.

The wax thing is not working for me.

If you do try wet sanding please keep us posted or PM me so I can try it too.

Or,,, if you find any other solutions.

TTT for you

Re: Cracked Clearcoat options

Discussing this with some local boys in a weekly show and shine,, some say it is risky wet sanding a factory paint job as they are usually quite thin.

It was reccomeded that we try a buffing compound first with a buffing machine. This is after I showed them my hood and in the right angle to the sun you can see my clear coat damage but also in the right angle the paint looks perfect.

Just thought I would share this with you.

Re: Cracked Clearcoat options

if you mean it's cracked open and white, there's nothing you can do except re-paint. wet sanding will probably just make it worse unless you wet sand ever y last bit of clear coat off, then you might as well prep it all the way and paint it.

and it's not just sun and exposure that do it, i've seen over-eager detailers go right through the clear coat and basically destroy it. from then it's just a matter of time. that's why nobody details my car except me.
