bummed out on hood

Hood clear coat has been failing and so I took it in to see if a shop can buff it out,, result is clear coat is so thin they hit into the paint.

I am going to paint my hood myself and see how good I can get it,, can't be that harde right???? I am too cheap to pay $$ to just do a hood and if I get the hood prety good and learn I will do the whole car myself later. I did a car years ago cheaply (not cc/bc) and it turned out all right so I am confident I can do this with the right information.

Anyone have some good links to existing techniques or step by step on painting vehicles with pearl/metallics and cc/bc.

I will be painting pearl purple mettalic of course.

Re: bummed out on hood

i thought i would reply since no one has.i used to work in a body shop but left because the fumes made me more dummer. i would love to give advise,i just hope the forum doesnt pick me apart.there are many ways to paint i probaly use more products that are neccacary, but in the rust belt is you give metal a chance to rust it will. a quick guide..80 grit to grey sealer then 180 to bare metal.if your hood is dented or wavey, primer and block sand. if not sand hood with 320.try two coats of epoxy if you can see sanding scratchs primer then block that with 320. i like to seal everything before i paint it the basecoat on bare metal does not hold up.seal it with a grey, and i would add a little black sealer with the grey to get it closer to your color so you will use less paint. mine was $45 a pint which is all you will need. if you think it will match, paint it off the car,for that color i would do it on the car and blend the fenders.sand fenders with 1000 on the top 1500 on the rest. sand the whole fender for best results.yes you could "burn"it in but not for a car that will be washed and waxed on a regular basis.over time that burn method wont look good.mask fenders paint hood ,unmask fenders, reduce paint, lightly paint top of fender and hood ,i like to spray the last coat super light, then clear.no more room to type. be prepared to spend 300 in materials, some times body shops are cheaper than you can do it.maybe i helped?at least i tryed

Thanks very much for the reply! Keeping your explanation simple has made it easier to understand.

What is meant by "burn it in"??

For blending the fenders you sand the whole fender like you said,,, then reduce your paint and paint the top of fenders and hood I interpret that as the sides of the hood that meet the fenders and just the top of the fenders?? If so the sanding of the complete fender is to help the clear stick?? I am still a little confused on this part.

Once again thanks.

Re: bummed out on hood

burning it in refers to putting a high temp reducer to blend/burn the new clear into the old clear.the problem is if you ever buff that fender you will see the line of the new clear(just dont do it that way!).not to make a big job out of a hood, but if you want it to match perfect i would do the nose, and fenders. i just got my ss hood and im painting the whole car!.. plan B just paint the hood and clear it off the car and see if it matches close enough for you.you can always wait a week and do it over again
