Something's broken, HELP!

I was off for the day this morning when I started up my car, and it was making a loud buzzing noise after It started. I turned it off and it was still making the buzzing. I traced the sound to the starter which was just replaced with a remanufactured one a couple of weeks ago. After quickly disconnecting the battery, I took out the starter and saw that the gear on it was pushed back inside the casing, but was not worn down like I'd thought it would be. The gear that it connects to on the bottom side of the car was fine as well. It had been starting fine for 2 weeks before. The car is a 1986 Z28 with carb engine. Can anyone tell me what might have gone wrong? Was it just a pooched starter, or will the same thing happen if I put a new one in?
