Unhappy Rear Main Oil Seal

Well........I should have replaced it when I was changing the clutch...but it appeared to be in good shape at the time(NO LEAKS). Now I have a huge &^*^%#$ LEAK. And now I have to remove the *#&*()(*&&* transmission to get to the %$#C@#$ thing. What a pain in the ***. This ****ing car is a pain in the ***!

Well the question of the day is, what brand makes the best rear oil seal? (ex.Felpro)

Are there any tricks to putting this thing in?

The Haynes manual mentions a speacial tool? What's the name of this special tool?

Do I need this special tool? Or do I need to remove the oil pan to get to the rear main housing?

Any help would be apprieciated.

Thanks
PHIL

get a GM original seal ...

the special tool is just one big socket (same size as the tool)
dont bother buying or renting it .. just grab a big *** socket and tap it in .. just make sure its going in dead straight

you might wanna rent a removal tool from crappy tire .. or use the wet toilet paper method that i hear works really well

next time .. DO THAT SEAL THE FIRST TIME AROUND !!!!

Now Sideways is on crack...

The seal, NOT the tranny input bushing/bearing!

The rear main seal on the crankshaft. Yes, you need to drop the pan about an inch to change it properly. This is all assuming you don't have a pre-86 block with a two-piece seal. Then you'd have to remove the pan completely, remove the oil pump and rear main bearing saddle, and then use a small pusher tool to install the new upper seal-half by pushing out the old one. Be thankful its just the one piece...its a piece of cake.

Should be able to remove it with a small screwdriver and install by gently tapping it in. Just make sure it goes in flush and that you dont pinch the metal ring inside the seal. Also i believe there are two seal available one being better then the other but know that i think of it not sure if they are interchangeable they may require slightly different housings. :S If that be the case just get the right one. If it goes in good it will seal. I would also recommend making sure the area is fairly clear of residue before tapping the new seal in. Also just to make sure of the situation are you sure it is the rear main that is leaking and not the back of your intake. A intake leak can dribble down the block and saturate the area near the seal.
Anyways good luck
