Mike P's was a rare case, how many times has anyone here even scraped there stock k-member? It is not meant to protect the oil pan in anyway.

i disagree the stock k member is designed to protect the oilpan as well, if it werent dont you thing gm would have designed it smaller to save money?

and for pubiclover, had he had a stock k member his oil pan would never had been trashed.

Yeah but then his stock k-member would have been bent so he would have to buy an aftermarket one

That tubular K-member is not anywhere near strong enough for street use and sure as hell not for autoX or road racing. It will flex all over the place pretty much undoing all your other front suspension mods. The rack mounts are flimsy, and the control arm brackets are not boxed. They WILL twist and flex badly. The tube going across is not the weak point, the brackets are. The oilpan is hanging out pretty far for my liking too. The lower control arms appear fairly strong, but I would want to see them in person again before deciding.

I CAN tell you I have seen the LG Lower A arms bend under racing conditions
Lou has reinforced his lower A-Arms since Chuck's "experience" with them.

I LOVE my BMR... glad that stock hunk of crap is gone.

I'd never go back. If my BMR broke in half (like some of you guys are predicting), I would go out and buy another one without even complaining about it. But I don't believe that it would ever break. I do agree that the steering rack mounts were a little flimsy, but other than that... it's great.

i dont think anyones saying its gonna break, its just that under sever load, like AX or road racing its likely to flex and throw out alignment specs, which isnt the best thing for a AX or road racer. its meant for drag racing for wieght reduction, if your careful on the street its fine i guess but it doesnt offer much protection, which is why i wouldnt run it on a street car.

Seriously bunker knows what he is talking about . Do a couple searches on LS1.com in the Ax and RR forumns . Lou from Lg motorsports and Sam Strano are in it as well as alot of the hard core RR guys. Its built for 1 porpose , to save weight. Theres alot of good info out there if you dig a bit but your not going to find it in the drag section . Fraxx is full of guys that race ther cars and know what lives and what dies at the end of the day .

How strong do you think the bmr panhard rod is ?? Those rip apart too at the area around the bushing Ill see if I can dig up some pics . There just not built for the the same end use. Im sure its fine for the street. . . . Im keeping mine .

My Personal opinion is that even a lightweight K member should be able to handle severe braking forces, and cornering forces, or I would not build one.
Weight reduction is one thing, but I want to be able to slam the brakes on, and not worry about the front end folding up. If you only drag race the car with skinnys, (skinnys don't produce much brake forces) and never take the car on the street, then light, and flimsy is ok.
But 90% of the weight savings can be had if the K member is designed properly, without sacrificing safety.

Just my .02
