I still have my Alberta drivers license, after being here for 2 years and having insurance for all but a few months of that...

Finally someone told me that I could get in trouble for not switching, supposedly you only get 3 months to switch...

I stopped into a ICBC place to get it switched, but it was the wrong place, but I inquired about my insurance anyways, as I knew it was going to go up ALOT based on the news, etc...

I normally pay 102 a month for pleasure use (35% discount) with normal coverage (except my car isn't covered if I cause the accident, cna't remember what thats called) and now, its going to go up around 50-60 bucks a month!

So i'm looking at a 600 dollar increase!! Just because they want to do it... Its outrageous!!

I thought about the day permit for all the time, but its not worth it for me... I to only drive on the weekends for the most part, but even driving once a day on the weekends = 100 bucks a month (and actually, the dude at the ICBC place, said that the day permits WERE going up, he said they were 32 bucks for a single day or something) so say 100-120 a month, for the sake of an extra 20 bucks, I'd much perfer to be able to drive the car any time, just so long as it isn't to work.

Either way, huge insurance increases and gas prices going through the roof, really makes it hard on us... Bastards!!!

We outta protest!

Jeff

Mine was $1600 last year, it is $1900 this year

Is there anyway to have insurance that can be used on two cars? I would love to have 1 plate that I can swap between the Camaro and Neon as needed

Houman tried that (not the plate switching, but using his insurance on the camaro for his beater) and it netted him a 3 month suspension

Wow. Thats quite a bit cheaper than me (by $500 or so) and I have every discount possible. Is that for a full year, or part year JD?

You know what ICBC should really have in this day and age is a system where you buy yearly storage insurance, and you ONLY pay road insurance (that is, Collision... which is the killer) when you are driving (based on an hourly rate) - and you do this by buying it online. I.e. if your car is sitting in your garage all week, then you need to go out for 6 hours, so you insure your car for 6 hours or so only and print out the TOP on you computer. Then park it again.

Most of the fee that you pay for a TOP goes into the "processing costs" - IOWs. labour for number punching. Probably $3 is insurance, and $29 is labour. With computers and online transactions, labour should be out the door. It seems to me they could easily streamline things.

However, in the end, they still need to make enough money to pay for all the claims caused by the poor drivers in our society. So, even if they did what I proposed, they would just end up jacking up the price so that effectively we are still paying the same annual amount to them (ie. storage costs would jump from $400 annually to $1600 annually, and TOPs would be $60 per day). Either way, they'll eventually get it out of us because we have no choice.

They got us bent over a fence post...

Yeah , I was bitching at the insurance chick over this very subject . I think you should be able to pay for insurance and storage on the more expencive vehicle and be able to swap to the lesser vehicle whenever you wish . This would alow both vehicles to be covered at all times for one price . You can only drive one vehicle at a time anyways eh . There a bunch of ****ing losers .

I just paid something like 1645 with the new rates after telling them I was the only driver and have 10+ years...

That's $500 collision, the best comprehensive (what is it, 400 now?) and an extra million of liability...

Maybe it's because of the < 15km to work thing?
