No.......I don't - I had thought of that problem, and I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do at this point.

Try and find one used is all I can say. The $500 to buy one here is crazy. More so when you have a manual (shift points and shift firmness options are N/A with an M6).

I bought mine off a guy in College Station, TX for $150.

thats wrong. 4.10 ratio is stronger. it has to do with tooth contact. the smaller radius on the 9 tooth gear means less contact with the ring gear making it weaker. it like breaking a single pencil very easy, now break 10 at once it requires much more force. same with gears putting all the power thru 1 tooth of contact, verses dividing the power thru 1 1/2 teeth of contact.

Hrm......that makes sense to me.

Anyhow - I'm going with a package that is from Thunder Racing.
It's quite the deal.

As far as the tuning to take care of the speedo problem I'm going to send my PCM away to Ion at www.madz28.com to have it reprogrammed for 75 bucks.

A local shop is going to charge me 280 smackers for the install so all in all I'm going to be getting the new gear in my car for around $900 taxes in.

usally i go to the local wrecking yard. astro vans and s10's came with 3.73 or 4.10 gears. they charge me $50.00 usally with a auburn or gov-lock carrier that i sell on ebay for $100.00. most times pinion depth is good and side shims are only .010 off. all in all i pay myself $50.00 bucks for a gear swap.it's just a thought.

I am not going to comment on this even, more teeth = means less strength given all other factors remain the same ie. cut, finish, material.

Re: Can't decide........4.10's or 4.56's?

I've been emailing Thunder Racing for the last few days with questions about the gears and teeth.....

This is his reply when I asked about strength and splines:
You would think input shafts or axle shafts would be stronger with less
teeth, but the more splines they have, the stronger they are. Again it is
really just luck of the draw and proper installation. I've seen cars break
gears running 13's and cars not breaking them running in the 11's. No
warranty if they break. This is just a risk that you take. IIRC, the
Motives are the 39-9 count gear.
I'm not sure what to think, both make sense to me.......

if your not using slicks then who cares, its shock that breaks rears anyways. thats why auto cars dont break rears very often.

I have to admit........my tires are quite sticky.

These are them.

Although like I have said before - I don't plan on giving them a hard time.

I'm excited about this little mod.

I think 4.10s are a good mod...try buying some cheap but good used headers for your next mod.

Re: Can't decide........4.10's or 4.56's?

I have a stock cam and 4.56s kick ***..

Buuut.. I also have a strong intake, heads, valvetrain and exhaust, so I'm making power past 5000rpm.

Believe it or not, my car pulls hard to 6500rpm, I'm not sure about past that, because I don't take it any higher. But, I don't notice any significant dropoff in power between 5000-6500rpm. My tach is like a rocket from 3500rpm - 6500rpm.

I really can't wait to get a better cam and hydra rev kit so I can make more power and happily rev above 7000!

I'm really glad I didn't get 4.10s. If you are planning to stay naturally aspirated, and put some work into your car go with a higher numerical gear!

Re: Can't decide........4.10's or 4.56's?

I've pretty much abandoned the whole gears things for this season.

Now I'm thinking I should get them done near the start of next season.

It came down a money thing - and not having enough to funnel into the Camaro this year.
