Clutch Grip with deeper gears
Clutch Grip with deeper gears
Greetings all, im putting a T56 in my 96 LT1 buick wagon. Just a bolt on motor right now but doing some heads and cam next winter. So not a huge ammount of power or anything, mabey around 380 rhwp or something when its all done. It has the 8.5" Rear which is generally pretty tough, however I am going to be running 4.56 or 4.88 gears (gotta get this 4600lb pig moving
). The thing im worried about is that pinion in a 4.56 gearset is TINY and im going to go out on a limb here and say that its going to be the weak link.
I want the Street Twin clutch w/steel flywheel, however, im worried that hard shifting will snap the pinion sense the Street Twin does not slip at all. While this is no doubt, an awesome clutch thats apparently VERY streetable when your used to driving it, im thinking it would be more clutch then I could take advantage of at my power level and only put me at a disadvantage that if I pushed the car hard with it, it would just brake stuff.
With deep gears like 4.56 isn't alot of load is taken off the clutch? How about a slightly milder clutch like a SPEC 4 solid disk with the stage 3 compound? I like solid disks...Or would the engaugement be just as punishing on the driveline with a quick shift and this clutch setup? Or mabey I could get away with even less clutch? Im just scared of those puny little spec springs
Basically im ust looking for something pretty streetable in a 380 RWHP 4600lb boat with 4.56 gears that isn't going to burn up on the occassional trip to the dragstrip. Streetable in my opinion is smooth engauge/disenguagement, similiar to OEM, some off idle chatter doesnt bother me but i dont want the clutch to shake the **** out of the car from a stop eigther. Something i can slip alittle bit is also nice so I can give people rides without scaring them too much. Id also like something that wont burn up on the occiasional trip to the dragstrip
I've heard that the Mcleod single disk gets funky if you slip it, a few have described it as "shaking the car"
Ugh, Yeah...I know, I gotta stop being a baby and just choose something
Any input appricated guys, thanks!

Re: Clutch Grip with deeper gears
I've been running my ST for about 30K miles and I find it to be very streetable. It might be overkill for 380 rwhp, but the thing about HP is it's addictive...you'll be going for more later
If you mount a set of sticky tires on your ride I don't think your 8.5 rear stands a chance.

Re: Clutch Grip with deeper gears
Thanks, yeah no doubts here about it being a streetable clutch, seems like lots of people love it. Im rally just worried about it punishing the driveline, I won't be running slicks but I have 285/40 Kumho MX rear tires...they are just street tires but they are kinda sticky, and my **** is heavy, and our local track is usually pretty sticky. Seems like the T56 impala guys with the street twin go through their fair share of 4.56 gear sets
Been thinking about an alterntive that might be alittle more forgiving on the driveline:
LT4 Dual Mass flywheel + SPEC 4 solid disk (with Spec 3 compound)
