Can't decide........4.10's or 4.56's?

I'm about to buy a set of one or the other.

I don't take my car to Mission, and I will be easy, as always, on my launching to insure longevity.

I don't drive my car all that much due to lack of time and want a seat of the pants kind of mod for the summer.

What gearset to get?
I'm leaning towards 4.10's..........but the thought of 4.56's is not out of my mind completly.
Both are made in Motive gearsets - I found this site.

Opinions and suggestions?

Are there any other parts I will need to buy, other than the gearset itself, for the guy installing them for me?

Somebody also mentioned that there are actually 4.11 gearsets for our cars and that they are stronger......for some reason unknown to me.....

Does anybody happen to have any part numbers for any of the above?

4.11s are stronger, but that should be more then enough for your car. 3.73s would prolly be best all around though.

Are the 4.11's a motive gearset?

Have you got access to a part number?

I thought about 3.73's........but I fear that I would go through all that money and time and not see much of a difference from my 3.42's I currently have......

i believe the 4.11s are a motive set as well. do a search for the part number, its 4.10s with a different back cut. someone posted the info in this forum recently.

personally if you dont have a big cam, nor will you go to the track i dont feel that you need 4.10s. personally i think stockers are fine, but if you must then 3.73s will be suffiecent. even then i think gears should be done after a bigger cam.

Re: Can't decide........4.10's or 4.56's?

4.10s are fun .. but you don't even have headers, ur car falls flat on its face REAL quick once you go above 5000 rpm.. u'll run out of breath way too early with 4.10s and 4.56s will be rediculous .. 4.10s are a MUST if u can rev high .. if not u'll find urself revving super fast and not going anywhere and having to shift every 10 seconds...

and 4.11s arent 4.10s with a different backcut .. that number comes from dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear... so 4.11s have different number of teeth on both ring and pinion .. generally the less the number, the thicker each tooth, the stronger each tooth, unless you step up to larger diameter ring which means 12 bolt, 9" etc

I've done 2.73, 3.27, 3.42, and 3.73 in autos. I find 3.42 on manuals are just too tall.

My advice is go with the 4.11's. It's not so much the highway gearing that would be trouble with 4.56's, it's the lower gears.

3.27 (A4) in 4th = 2.28
4.56 (M6) in 6th = 2.28

As you can see, running down the highway with the 4.56's would be just like driving with a stock A4 setup.

But 1st gear with the 4.56's would be like driving an A4 with a 3.96 axle ratio. With 3.73's I found it was like driving a 4 cylinder around town. You're revving like crazy, but you're not really gaining any speed.

Don't bother with the 3.73 in a manual. It's not enough to justify your time and cost of swapping. You'll be happy with the 4.11's. Makes the M6's a lot more fun to drive.

I've been in cars with 4.56, 4.88, and 5.13 but they're just too much gear for a daily driver or much highway driving. (Those cars were all TH400's too). I wouldn't do it at today's gas prices anyways.

payam, my bad i think the back cut on the 4.11s made em stronger, or something....

Re: Can't decide........4.10's or 4.56's?

Hey Panda, good choice. 4.1 gears consist of 41 teeth on the ring gear and 10 on the pinion whereas 4.11 gears consist of 37 teeth on the ring gear and 9 on the pinion. This combo means that there is more meat of the 4.11 gear set per tooth than on the 4.1, thus, a stronger gear set, regardless of manufacturer.

Do you have a Hypertech Power Programmer or something else to recalibrate the computer for this change?
