Hello all, I’m pretty new to car stuff and all that, but I figured I got a decent car to learn this kind of stuff with. Speaking of, mine is a 1996 Camaro Z28 SS with 198,XXX miles on it. Ran good till it decided to shoot out it’s coolant level sensor, but I got a new part for that and plenty of dexcool. It’s got a SES light, but the guy I bought the car from said it was the secondary air pump. Anyway, any advice for caring for this old thing would be much appreciated!
I would recommend putting an OBD-2 scanner on it to find out why that light is on. Might be more than the AIR pump. Would also be good to try and identify any modifications. For example, the intake manifold appears to be painted red. Could just be paint, or maybe someone has installed some LT4 parts.
You can gain a lot of insight into what the car consisted of when it left the factory, by decoding the Service Parts Identification label. That can be done from the factory service manual (link below to a free download), various online references, or going to the CompNine website and paying a small charge for a downloadable listing based on the VIN.
Thanks, will do. The guy I got it from bought it to save it from getting parted out, so he doesn’t know for sure what all has been modified on the car. All he knew is what he did, which was rebuild the transmission and re-install the factory security system. The original owner installed an aftermarket security set up which apparently bricked the car and made it not start.
