post header install problems...

Hey guys,

finished installing my headers yesterday... what a pain in the butt it was... Jet-hot LTs, Hooker Y, Taylor OVC kit, new NKG Tr55r plugs, new 02 sensors and simulators...

I have a few concerns that are making me less than happy... The headers dont appear to be leaking at any place, but the noise in the enging bay is considerablly louder (too be expected i'd assume) my problem is that when i accelerate at approximatlye 2400Rpms to 3000RPMs it feels like the motor is missing or stumbling... and it gets quite a bit louder at that rpm range, after that it smooths out and pulls very hard... im not a very experienced mechanic so im having trouble diagnosing the problem, i dont get any SES lights but i am concerned none the less. Also i can smell gas in my exhaust much more than before, likely because i dont have a Catalytic converter anymore...

My guess is that its a problem with the taylor wires, perhaps grounding out or not making good contact... i was not pleased with how that came out, ie 2 of them seemed kinda sketchy... Maybe i should buy a new set of wires and try it? something that isn't as much of a pain as the taylors!!!

If anyone could perhaps give me some advice that would be very helpfull... Because right now im kinda discouraged and regretting doing the headers.... lots of work, money, and effort for a car that doesn't seem to be running as good as it was before

I was kinda hoping that i might go to the track (NED) this friday or next and see some of you more experienced guys there, and perhaps have one of you guys give it a listen just to get a seccond opinion... Cause most of you have probably gone through what im up against

thanks, matt

Sounds like the problem to me, look at the motor running in the dark to see if you get any arcing. Did you get an LT4 knock module while you were at it? Just my .02, which usually isn't even worth that much. Good luck though. Rob

Are the headers cracked? I used to smell gas hardcore then the header finally just broke and I realized it was cracked the whole time.

I didn't hear any leaks from mine, it broke around the EGR fitting. Poke your head around and see where its coming from. If its not an exhaust leak you have a serious fuel problem that is not good.

Also those headers could be leaking at the collector and it resonated into the bay, or your header gasket might not be seated properly, what kind of gasket did you use and was it new or used.

I keep thinking of more things, I really need to see and hear it. If it was a material gasket VS. a metal i.e. copper gasket or if it was material with copper or steel sleves around the tubes they sometime have bad sealing issues, if it was a copper than as long as the bolts threaded your ok. Also did you torgue the header bolts, if so to what ft/lb or in/lb, did any of the bols go in hard and did use use a anti-sieze lube and or any threadlocker. These are things I need to know when I see the car, also was there a gasket where the headers met the mid/cat pipe, again were they material or a thick metal ring at the flange?

Damn I just need to see it. Sorry for al the posts!!!
