Good shop to balance flywheel
Good shop to balance flywheel
Hey does anyone know of a good shop that balances flywheels? I called just about every shop close to Boston with no avail. No one balances flywheels it seems.
I'm actually in the process of ordering the McLeod Street Twin and steel flywheel combo, zero balanced for my stroker, and was just wanting to doublt-check the zero balance at a shop.
Thanks in advance.

I know it might be a bit outta the way for you but I'd try giving
ABT MACHINE a call. They are located on Rte 16 in Holliston, MA. They balanced the entire rotating assembly when I did the LT4 conversion on my M6 93 Z. This included the flywheel as well. They do top notch work and all the area motor heads use them. They are strictly an automotive machine shop. Here is their info.....
Abt Machine Company
Pope Industrial Park
Holliston, MA 01746
Phone: (508) 429-4355
Good luck with your project

Joe,
I actualy had them do the machine work on my block and assemble my stoker on you recommendation a while back. However, I did ask them then if they could balance my flywheel and they said no. It seams no one does flywheel balancing anymore

Re: Good shop to balance flywheel
Hmmmm that's strange. I could have sworn that they did mine
What was their reason for not being able to do it? Did they say it's not necessary or anything? I would find it hard to believe that they don't have the capacity to perform that service.
I would think that just having it resurfaced would be good enough. A flywheel should be pretty much balanced as it is.

Re: Good shop to balance flywheel
I don't remember the reason why ABT couldn't balance FWs. But I am very positive that they said no when I asked. I think they can balance rotating assemblies, but FWs probably require a different machine to balance "ala carte"
Thanks Crovax WS-6, I will give them a call.

Re: Good shop to balance flywheel
Perhaps shops can only balance the flywheel with a rotating assembly??
In case you can't get it done, my Twin flywheel was okay. The shop asked for it when they balanced the bottom end on my stroker, but it was okay. Just make sure you unbolt the weight from it for neutral balance.

Re: Good shop to balance flywheel
Put socket on a breaker bar. Hit breaker bar with sledgehammer. (I wouldn't recommend doing it with a ratchet since it probably won't transmit the full impulse (think "shock") to the bolt head, and you stand a good chance of breaking it.)
Your other alternative would be to somehow cleverly jam something in the flywheel to stop it from turning. However I have not worked on a ls1 so I don't know what you can do....
There are also flywheel turning tools that hook into the ring gear on the flywheel that can be used to hold it in place. I know that won't help you right now. I am unsure if Autozone would have something like that.

when i had to take mine off i jad one of my friends hold it in place with a tire iron on the teeth. and i used a breaker bar on it. but if you are plannin on reusing it i wouldnt reccomend that.
