Compaq Presario 700Z problems

A buddy of mine has one of those and it keeps shutting off on him. He has not connected it to the internet so no worm issues.

It had XP and he installed Win98 so he could control his FAST computer EFI program for his race car.

Any place he should start to look for issues on why it was shutting down? Thanks.

Any repair shops in the area that might be able to look at it?

Check for BIOS updates but my hunch is heat is the culprit. Does it happen after it has been running about the same period of time? You could always put it in a cooler for 1/2 hour and see if it works longer (don't freeze it). Portables are proprietary and parts are tough to find like power supply units and system boards which are the usual potential culprits for this type of problem.

I ran into the same problem with my laptop when i was trying to run the FAST software. I took xp off and went with windows 98,
I called FAST and they told me how to make the windows XP work with the FAST.
I haven't done it yet but you may want to check it out.

But this is all based on if he is using the windows version of FAST, if he is using the DOS version, then there is no DOS support with Windows XP and it will never work.

sure it will, right click on the application and select properties, then goto the compatability tab and theres a checkbox that will run it in win95 compatability mode. hope that helps some
