What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
Re: What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
I could be wrong...or thinking of just a general rule that doesnt apply to lt1's, but shouldn't you pull 2 degrees for ever 50 horse shot? I wouldn't risk it if i was you its alot easier to pull timing than it is to fix a blown engine.
Re: What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
This trend of not pulling any timing with even some pretty healthy nitrous shots was mostly brought on by some of the nitrous kit manufacturers that still want to have nitrous kit sales with the bolt on crowd...you know, guys that don't even want to spend $100 extra bucks for a timing retard box, or $250 for a good ignition that includes one... this many times is also the same crowd that rarely runs a $30 FPSS, or $10 colder plugs with their nitrous set-ups and wonder why things go wrong
....With these "no timing pulled" kits, the jetting is just fattened up some to try and get away without pulling any timing.....it gets by alot of the time, but many times it dosn't....but in either case it's far from being the safest, and best way......2 degrees of timing retarded per 50 HP increase (plus 1-2 for added safety) is the rule of thumb for a reason

Re: What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
i didnt pull any timing until i went to a 175 shot.... my car ran the same on a 150 with 4 degrees pulled as it did with none..... but i left it at 4 just to be safe...... i was pulling 9 once i was up to a 230 shot.... on a stock motor by the way
Re: What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
When you hear about pulling 2 degrees for every 50 horsepower that is based on optimum timing. But since factory timing isn't always optimum you are in essence already running with a few degrees retard. If you have changed the timming from stock then yes you will want to retard it but it has been my experiance that on stock timing 150 horse power is fine. Also if you are running the nitrous pn good gas, say C16 you may only pull 3 per 100 as opposed to 4. The 2 per 50 or 4 per 100 is a very conservative number and has some room to be adjusted
Re: What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
Well when I had a mail order tune, my timing was at 43 degrees, and my a/f was 13.5 across the board, and my car never pinged, then I got dyno tuned, and he pulled the timing back to 38 degrees, and richened it up to 13.0 across the board, so thats why I'm not so worried about pulling timing.

I wasn't pulling timing with my last kit and lets just say that I ended up paying for it in the end. My Mallory 685 is going to be in today, nuff said.

Just to update the thread, I'm getting knock retard on my scanmaster when I spray, so I'm going to buy a mallory 685.
Re: What size shot do you need to start pulling timing with?
Get an MSD timing retard switch and plug in how much retard ya want with a chip. Have it activate when ya turn on your NO2 arm switch.
2* x 50 shot is the norm=== 8* for 200 shot and 4* for 100 shot. Then if it is safe put back some 1* at a time until it rattles and then take that last * back out.

if you are at the track try messing with your timing try retarding it a little and see if you get faster times. i was running 175 horse shot with 7 degrees retard and it wasnt enough i went to 10* and gained 2 tenths out of it. it never hurts to pull timing
