Is there such a thing as progressive retard?
Is there such a thing as progressive retard?
Long story short, I want to put together a nitrous system with a nice progressive controller such as the NX Maximizer. As I'm sure is common knowledge here, you need to retard your timing as you use more nitrous. I believe the rule of thumb is 2 degrees for every 50hp...?
Yet, when I look around at the various options for spark control it all seems to be; "reach a certain rpm and pull a set amount."
Seems to me that having a nitrous system that comes on in a smooth curve and an ignition retard that comes on in "square steps" will lead to having optimal timing only at the mid point between "steps" of retard.
Am I just missing something here?

Re: Is there such a thing as progressive retard?
If you are spraying 150 and less there is really not need to put a retard fuction in. I recommend 2 per hundred as a starting point, after you pass the 150 point. So for a 200 shot I would pull 4 degree out and watch the knock sensors and read the plugs.

Well thank you for your answer, but all you did was to address the amount of timing to pull per 100hp.
What I'm actually trying to find out is, is there an ignition timing retard box that pulls timing in a smooth curve as opposed to steps.
In somewhat distorted mathmatical terms, if the nitrous comes on in a smooth "calculus-like" curve and the timing gets pulled in a squarish "algebra-like" curve, then your two curves don't really match up.
To visualize; the nitrous is coming on in a steady rise like this:
..../
.../
../
./
/
And the retard is coming out in a "stepping" fashion like this:
_
_|_
___|_
_____|_
On the one hand I suppose you could use a staged nitrous kit that would make the increase in nitrous flow come on in a stepped fashion; like the ignition timing is being pulled.
However, I like the idea of a progressive nitrous increase and would LOVE to find a regressive timing retard.
I really hope this doesn't all sound like babble...

Re: Is there such a thing as progressive retard?
no real need for the type of timing retard you asking for when using nitrous.
that being said, the Programmable Digital 7 from MSD can be made to ramp timing however you want for around $700.
But as far as i know, timing maps are stepped per rpm,so you wont find exactly what you are looking for.

So the Digital-7 can do a smooth timing pull, as opposed to a stepped one?
Great. I was hoping there's be something like that out there.

Oh crap.
If I were an Alpha Geek, I'd write a program for it to do that. In Assembler.
Unfortunately, I'm a just a NOC monkey.
There are probably only 2 or 3 people on the whole board who will get that joke. But THEY will love it.

The LTCC does that? That's great news, because I was planning to go to an 8-coil solution anyway.
Re: Is there such a thing as progressive retard?
Ok I found the unit that can progressively remove timing. The FJO341B engine management system... This thing can do it all..http://www.fjoracing.com/index2.htm
