500 shot

A LT1 383 fully forged with stock cam and heads can handle a 500 shot of nitrous? like a fogger sistems of NOS? or the cam and heads have a limit for that?

Re: 500 shot

impossible on stock heads and cam and block.. i dont even think the stock heads will allow that much to flow.. you would need some seriously race ported lt4 afrs, a solid roller cam and a very very serious valvetrain, and even then the only way you are getting 500 hp of nitrous into that motor is in stages.. plus if you have your stock block you will probably turn it into mush

Re: 500 shot

I agree, the only way something like that would be remotely feasible is with some sort of staged system. I can't concieve of an OEM small block being up to the sudden "hit" of a 500 horse shot unless it was multiple staged. Also, the rest of the drivetrain would certainly need to be very beefed up. What makes you ask? Is it bench racing or are you planning on building something? It would also be very hard to harness that kind of torque in a car without a real rce car chassis as wel, that's why I am asking.

Overall, it would be an "experiment" in that I doubt anyone has made something like that work (500hp nitrous shot in an OEM small block with a production chassis). As an experiment, you would have to expect to make some mistakes (i.e. break some stuff) along the way with no guarantee of success. Fun to think about though and if you have enough money and time it'd be a trip to try to get all the details worked out.

I think there are some guys spraying a 300 or 350 shot. When you find out what the limits are, let us know.

Later,

Steve.

Re: 500 shot

What your engine can handle and what it can inhale are two different things.

General rule of thumb is that you can add another 50% to your N.A. horsepower with nitrous. So, if you make 500 at the flywheel, then your engine can breath enough to inhale another 250 in nitrous and enrivhing fuel.

That's not down from Mt. Sinai mind you... that's just a good rule of thumb and has been for like 20 years.

I'm currently leaving on a 400 shot single stage dirrect port.
The motor is a 396 LT1 with ported iron heads.

If I knew the x amount of nitrous that y's car could "take," I'd be a very non-broke-as-a-joke college student!

Please refrain from using "500 shot" and the word "stock" in the same sentence. It's like saying high compression and supercharged together.

And anything over say a 200 shot gets into the realm of requiring or greatly benefiting from specialty items. Custom pistons, staged or progressive use, fuel considerations, cam/heads dedicated to the job and ignition considerations. That's just a short list...

I would search this forum or on LS1tech and see what has been done and what others recommend. There is a wealth of knowledge already avialable, but from what I've seen or heard of outside Full race applications with Gen 1 aftermarket blocks and parts, a 350 shot seems to be about the upper end of the spectrum. Some may have gone and a few are planning on venturing into the 400 realm, but those are people that don't have to ask questions.

Nitrous is like an expensive good, if you have to ask, your probably not ready.

Are you saying that 1000 hp fogger systems from NOS are for cars taht makes 2000hp on dyno?
why a 2000hp car (if posible) wants another 1000 on nitrous? or are they only for dragsters?

I'm sorry, I don't know how you could remotely take that meaning from what I said.

Perhaps you could phrase your question differently so that I can have a better chance of giving you an answer that makes sense?

Re: 500 shot

Id like to see any street car that could hold traction with a 500 shot let alone having the motor stay together, lol

Re: 500 shot

I am in the process of pushing this limit on an lt-block. With that said we are looking to make 600 na h/p and have a progressive controlled 450 direct port shot, and a 150 shot with a nossle. Now this block is going to be at least partially filled and will not be a street car. I have a 9 inch with 40 sp axles and a full spool in the car already. We are working on the motor and fuel system and with any luck we should get some test passes done in Nov. My post is just to let the original poster know what we are going through to try and make this happen. The top rings cost me damn near $500

Re: 500 shot

Here's my "rules of thumb". They apply to small block OHV V-8's and represent the total rwhp for each configuration.

Stock parts ~1.25hp/ci
Typical built up motor (medium quality rotating ***'y, 4-bolt main caps, etc.) ~1.75hp/ci
Excellent parts, skilled ***'y ~2.5hp/ci
Best parts available, put together by someone who know what is what ~3.0+hp/ci

So, for a 350 these levels would represent ~425, 600, 875, 1,000+rwhp

Just my simple way of looking at it.

Rich
