v6 transmission work in LA Area?

Hey guys,
Yeah, I know, it's not cool to register just to ask a newbie question.
I did a search for transmission guys around our area, I know some of you know good mechanics, but nothing specific, at least, not for a couple years.

I have a regular 3.8L V6 '96 Camaro, and there's a "P-1870" code, which basically means the transmission is slipping, and it seems to be 3-4th gear, overdrive.

It's still drivable, but it needs a replacement or overhaul.
I've gotten an overhaul quote of $1600 waaaaay up in San Fernando (1 yr warranty), and the dealership wants $1900 to replace it.

Do any of you work on transmissions? I can be without car for a whole week if that's what it takes, but I'd love to do it locally. Any recommendations? What about price? That San Fernando place seem fair?

Thanks!

Toy Shop Transmissions in Pomona:

I'd recommend my dad, but he's just swamped with work right now. Toy Shop is a good place and several members have gone there with good results.

Re: v6 transmission work in LA Area?

Wow. Can I just say that Toy Shop kicks ***? They were very patient with me over the phone, listened, thought about it, and diagnosed it, and it didn't need a whole transmission rebuild. They tightened the transmission, too, all for about 1/6th of the price of a transmission rebuild.

It was an hour drive each way, but they let me drop it off and pick it up after hours, and pay over the phone. Well worth my time and gas money.

EDIT:
Here's the problem and solution (for all those search engines)
After the slippage happens when in 3-4th gear, and I get back to 1st/2nd gear, the car would kinda buck when changing gears. They updated the valve body and spacer plate to correct the problem. Brilliant.
