Wrecked car, guaging interest...
I was driving over to Grand Rapids, and got caught in a huge downpour, and I decided it would be fun to hydroplane sideways into a ditch and bash thru a few trees. After sh!tting myself, I luckily was able to walk away from the wreck, but I am left with a Formula that will hopefully, yet regrettably, be totaled out. This has yet to be determined, but if it is totaled, I am trying to decide whether I want to buy it back salvage or not. Is there any local interest in any parts off a '95 Firebird Formula? Local to either Detroit or Grand Rapids area, or I suppose anywhere in between also....
Pretty much the whole passenger side is banged up. Front fascia cracked, fender bashed up, door is trashed, qtr. panel all bashed up, and rear fascia is not broken anywhere, but the paint is all spiderwebbed. The roof is good, the hood is good, the hatch is good, and fender, qtr. panel, and door on the driver side are all good. There are a couple spots on the hood and headlight covers that need paint, but no sheet metal damage.
It's an LT1, the engine had just gone over 100k, ran awesome. The auto trans is newer, with 24k miles on it. There are already 2 ppl interested in the engine, computer, and fuel system. I'm not sure yet if there's any frame/chassis damage. I had just put brand new shocks and springs on it, Eibach Pro-kit and Bilstein HD's. These should not be damaged (I hope). The only other mod's I have on it are a flowmaster muffler (trashed), and a K&N FIPK intake kit.
So, sorry for the long post, but if there's interest in parts, I'll buy it back and hook some people up! If not, then I prolly won't bother. May she rest in peace
And if there's any questions about any parts, just post up and let me know. I will know more about specific damage after an official estimate is done, hopefully early next week. Thanks.

Re: Wrecked car, guaging interest...
big cowl - it depends on what price they give me for buying it back. I will hopefully know more next week. The car is in GR for now.
dirtybird - I don't think the wheels got banged up
I have a few pics, I'll see if I can get 'em posted

Re: Wrecked car, guaging interest...
Sorry to hear about your car, glad to hear your alright though.
Your car will live on as parts of other peoples rides though.
If you part it out,I am interested in the steering wheel w/air bag(if its not blown) and the center consol.

Re: Wrecked car, guaging interest...
Tom - thanks. I was fortunate. Although it hurts seeing my poor car all bashed up.
The air bags did not deploy, and the console is OK. The only thing about the interior that worries me is that when I hit the trees, the passenger window was smashed out, and of course it was raining like all hell while it was sitting there and while it was towed. So quite a bit of water had to have gotten in there, on the carpet and passenger seat at least.
I'll post a price for the car when I find out.

Re: Wrecked car, guaging interest...
Update: I just talked to my ins. agent and the claim is going to some claims manager tomorrow (Fri) for approval. When/if he approves, the shop will do an official estimate and I'll get word. Talk about draggin it out
Re: Wrecked car, guaging interest...
Another Update: The car has been deemed a total loss - $6300 damage as it stands, and more expected to be found. SO, the claims representative is looking into a salvage value as I type this. I am going to call the shop and inquire a little more into the damages to make sure the engine is ok, etc. Try to get some more details on it. I'll post up when I hear more.
I'll miss her

Re: Wrecked car, guaging interest...
well guys, here it is. I got a salvage price: $2k. I dunno about you, but seems a little high to me. I also got a copy of the estimate sent to me... There is some powertrain damage...
The exhaust, as I mentioned got mangled
Needs new oil pan (I am not sure what exactly the damage to the pan was, but it got banged and knocked the engine sensor off - that explains why the low oil light came on. However, I know the car was not losing oil.)
Trans pan is dented and needs to be replaced
The rear floor pan they said needs to be repaired and refinished - I don't know the details on the floor, prolly just dented up a bit - labor cost was all they gave
Fuel tank is dented - my guess is it would be ok, it was not leaking
They also listed rear axle tie rod....? $55
Rear axle tie rod brace...? $12
I am not sure what those last two parts are.... Unless they're talking about the tracking bars, or lower arms...
Anyway, all this in addition to the exterior damage I listed, plus both mirrors and banged up, passenger side rocker. As far as the suspension I had put on it, I think the only worry with it would be if the shocks were damaged from bottoming out, other than that the shocks and springs should be ok.
Here is my verdict, I don't think I'm going to buy it back unless anyone really wants it. I could part it out, but I don't have the garage space and they gave me a very generous fair market value, so it will not be worth the hassle for me. However if someone wants it for parts, to fix etc., it's yours for $2k. Personally I think there's more money to get out of it than that. I've explained the damage as best as I could with the info I have. If you're interested, send me a pm and I'll get you my phone # and we can work out picking up the car, etc. It is in Grand Rapids. Let me know because I told the claims lady I would call her back tomorrow (thur, the 18th)
