Tranny/Converter question
Tranny/Converter question
How do you tell if the converter is seated all the way back?
Right now the bolt flange that mates up against the flywheel is about 1/2 inch back from the edge of the case. Thanks

That sounds about right. Usually for me, I could tell when the converter had no axial play. It just "felt" locked in.
I've only changed one converter in a 4l60e, so I don't remember, but on all the others I've done it had two recesses in the converter that matched the two ears of the pump drive inside the trans. You can see those ears if you have the trans out. Just make sure the converter is oriented to match and it should slide right in where it goes.

I measured the distance from the back of the block (the surface that mates to the bellhousing) to the bolting surface of the flexplate. Then I put a straight edge across the bellhousing of the trans and measured back to the mounting lug on the installed converter.
The second measurement MUST be greater than the first measurement. If not pull the converter out a little, turn it a little and try again. Took me 3 or 4 tries Friday to get that last spline to line up.

Everyone has their own method...heres mine:
Turn the converter clockwise while pushing it into the pump until you hear/feel it set, then turn it the other way and do it again. You should hear a solid "thunk" when its seated.
