Post Cam install, who wants to help/learn how to on a LS1?

Nick, here is your chance to learn..

It's going down tonight. Going to go & get a puller, TQ wrench, oil, filter, and a few odds & ends, and I'll be back to start. Dam, I gotta head to Flint to get the Helms manual.

I'll check this post when I get back, and periodically during the install. So post here, or email me your #. My place is easy to find, and 10 min off I-69, all paved RD's. Will have beer, available if needed. If ya want the experience, come on over. This will be my 2nd install. If I had some help for sure help, I could put off the install until tomorrow morning, but I'm kinda eager to begin.

I was asked not to post the exact specs on the cam, so I wont, but I will say, DAM, the lift is a **** hair below 600 on both sides, and a little bigger than the 230/236 originally quoted. I guess it's supposed to be some secret **** they have been working on.. Ya, kinda like those "special tires" from the movie Rolling thunder... I'll know by the end of tomorrow.. Would be nice to be able to hit the street tire shootout & break in the cam..

Any volunteers, step forward..

Harold I have all of that stuff if you need anything. The only tool I don't have is the balancer install tool. Call me if you need anything. Still working on my axles, almost done. We'll get some heat cycles in it late tonight!

Damm, I have seen rollercoasters with less lift then your cam is going to have

By the way, I'll try to get you before and after distances on the new brake setup as soon as I get them done.

Have fun on the install!!!

Harold, I may be able to shoot over there. But a good torque wrench can be found at Home Depot. It'll be about 60 bucks for either one. You can get a 10ft-lb to 100ft-lb or a 10ft-lb to 250ft-lb. I have both. I bought the large one because you need to crank the balancer bolt down to 250ft-lb's or in the tolerance range from the face of the crank flange to the milled surface in the balancer. Funny how that distance works out to 250ft-lbs. A bunch of psycho's at GM must of thought that painful task up!

I've gotta get two more quarts of gear oil. The 12 bolt is a thirsty pig, she sucked up 3 1/2 quarts already. Minus the fact that I spilled the additional quart all over the floor, doh!!! Should have it on the street by 10 AM.

I do have to shoot up 69 tomorrow night to goto a friends place just south of Flint. I also wanted to swing by Mid Michigan and watch. There's no way I'm going to be able to race it tomorrow. Speaking of which, are you going to make it to Milan Monday night? I'm guessing no because you'll be out at ARE, but let me know either way.

I'd like to stop by and give a hand or two. I can certainly bring helms manuals, tools, etc. if you still need them. I don't have your number though. Can you give me a call with directions in the morning? Cell is 616 292 0370.

Time for a small nap before I get up and finish the car!!

Steve, I had to also fill the hell out of the 12 bolt, but I was told to use the side fill hole as an indicator, not the rear hole on the TA cover, got at least 3.5 in there.

I have anti freeze. I was told the pushrods I have will be fine. I'm thinking about getting one of those adjustable pushrods that you can use to determine proper pushrod length. I've also been reading about ways to check for proper valvetrain geometry. It was in the last Engine Builders magazine. Anyone see that?

Ha ha Bill, ya, they say bigger isn't always better. Guess that isn't Wades (ARE) train of thought.

I think I have everything, except the puller & the TQ wrench. I'm on my way to Auto Zone to get the puller & see if they rent out a TQ wrench. I'll give you a call in a few Steve. I'm drinking my coffee & waking up before I get started.

I'm not sure when I will go to ARE. Wade asked that I get the cam in, running, & IAC's in the proper range, then call his cell & arrange something for the beginning of the week. So I'll start with getting it in, then try to figure out a track date.

BTW, I have the Helms manuals already. I hope you are up, I'm calling right now.

You better come & finish it up then. I got the hard stuff done. You should be able to handle the rest. Thanks Steve, for coming from the West side to lend a helping hand. I owe you. It should be finished around noon. Taking my time, & doing it right. I aint no mechanic, and doing a good job & right is more important than doing it in "4 hrs" like most guys claim they can do it in...

Just have to put on accesories, change oil, & fire it up, change oil, burp the coolant, run it for a few down the road, change the oil after about 30-50 miles, and then let it rip!! Gotta eat & go to sleep, see ya.
