Cam install questions...

Having some trouble finding my self "16 retractable pen magnets" to hold the lifters up. Any one know where to find some? Or better yet anyone have the JRP tool that i can rent for a doay or 2?
I have read over ls1howto.com cam swap site and it looks pretty detailed. just wondering if any one has any tips or troubles while doing a cam swap that i should be aware of before i start?
Thanks for all the help, Dane

99 cents not a bad deal
Timberwolf- when you did your springs what way did you find best to keep your valves from falling in the combustion chambers?
Thanks again, Dane

I used "option 2" here:

I also used a "Larry" valve spring tool... worked like a charm.

Re: Cam install questions...

Is this a ls1?

I just rotated my cam 3 times pulled it out carefully had new cam ready to go and slipped it in carefully. never used a magnet. My understanding in the guide I had is that there is somthing like a static ring that holds things in place on the LS1.

When removing the springs and replaceing them I used a air compresser set to a really low pressure and attached with a special adapter in the spark plug hole that kept everything seated nicely

yeah, the lifter cups will hold the lifters. BUT it's a friction fit. if something happens... doors gets opened or shut, wind blows just right, a buttefly sneezes.. (you get my point) a lifter could drop at any time and then you are into a MAJOR ordeal. I felt safer using the magnets for extra insurance.

Re: Cam install questions...

I tried the JPR tool but found out the hard way that I got one of the very first ones and it would not work in 2000+ cars so I had to pick up some magnets. For the springs a cut off a normal $15 dollar spring compressor like the one shown in the instructions on ls1howto

FWIW, I used magnets on the lifters and compressed air to hold the valves up. One point to watch out for: I've heard of people who had the magnet head fall off, dropping the lifter and magnet into the motor. Check your magnets out first, give a tug on the end to make sure they are solid and that the telescoping parts aren't going to come loose.

Also, if you get hosed and can't find enough magnets, I'm at 12 and dequindre and still have a bunch of them in my toolbox.
