Re: hot rod/race car insurance

Ive been on the search for ins for a long time.

Bottom line is that if its a race car they will not insure it. If you tell them its not and you file a claim and they find out its a race car your finished.

I just wanted comprehensive coverage for agreed value incase of fire, theft, ect... I have yet to find a company to insure my car.

Ive tried everyone that deals with specialty ins. I even had 1 tell me no just because it was a camaro.

You can get coverage for it if its a "show" car but once you drive into a race track they consider it a "race car".

Many companies wont insure it because its too "new".

Condon and Skelly, American Collectors, Voyager, Grundy... ive tried am all.

Some just wont insure in NJ period. Good luck with your search and if you find anything please post up. Ive been in the same boat for a long time.

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

Actually I should correct myself. I did find a few companies that will insure a race car... its just that they were waaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range. And I mean I could just buy a new car for what they wanted. 2 years later I'm still on the hunt...

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

yea...i've been searching all weekend w/ no luck...all the places want the car to be at least 15 years old...i guess i'm gonna have to stick it out w/ the minimal insurance coverage i can get from my company..and just insure the car for half of the year if possible....i'll let u know if i find out anything..
p.s.
who tuned your car projectz?...i'm lookin for a place in ny/nj that tunes lt1's...i have a pcmforless tune on my 396 right now..and i'm only trapping at like 114(at e-town..116 at island)..i think w/ some more aggressive timing(maybe a different fuel map)...i can get it to trap closer to 118-120...i'd lt1-edit it myself..but i don't wanna risk it...

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

how many miles do you plan on putting on it per year? i will have an answer for you tomorrow if you get me that info tonight. have my brokers working on it. may need an appraisal though, i am told i do once i have all my parts installed. i just refinanced my house and ended up with 30k back. some money went back to the house, the rest into the car. (not done with it though) but my concern was dumping in 15k and wrecking the car and only getting book value after i just spent or will have spent all that money.

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

I read about insurance being offered to race cars a while back. I looked up the thread on the board I read it on, but it's been bumped off the page and the search function won't retrieve it.

The insurance was to cover the race car and trailer while in storage or transit to the track. Theft, fire and accidents on the way to the track would be covered. No regular insurance company will cover a race car - period. It would also cover your car and rig in the pits of the race track. As soon as you drive the car into the staging lanes, all bets are off. Basically, when you're not lined up to race, or racing, it's covered.

I'm sorry I can't find the name for you. You may want to look into Haggerty as well.

I emailed Grundy from their website to ask if they cover a car that crashes while racing on a race track. I'll let you know if/when they respond. Everything on their site is about hot-rodders (not the same as a racecar), classic show cars, etc. All the events they have listed are car shows, festivals and cruises. I have never heard of any insurance company that would cover a race car that crashes while racing.

I will let you know what they say though. If they do cover a car while racing, I'll be making a phone call.

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

just got off the phone with my agent, according to him, if the car is street legal, and no clauses in your policy against racing then it should be covered regardless. once its not street legal, or unfit for the road, your basically screwed. as far as covering upgrades vs. book value i.e supercharger etc. you just need to keep receipts and photos.

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

Basically what I was looking for was coverage for the car/trailer in storage and transit on an agreed value basis. Hagerty told me no because the car was too new...

I did find coverage for race cars on and off the track but it was mainly for cars with lots of money in them such as the pros. They insured many race teams in Top fuel and prostock. But 100 grand for coverage was a bit out of my league.

Also what I found was that if you dont tell them its a race car many places will offer insurance. As soon as you let them know its a race car and you just want coverage in storage and in transit they say no. My search continues...

Do you offer insurance for racecars? If so, do you only cover them while in storage or transit - or do you cover them if they crash ON the race track while racing?

Thank you.

Check out Parish Heacock 800-678-5173. Specifically for race cars. No coverage for the street or while racing but will cover if something happens in storage, in transit to the track (on the trailer), or in the pits.

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

i'm just lookin for coverage in transit to the track...i know once i'm there all bets are off....i would just not insure it...but god forbid somethin happens in that mile or so to the track ..i don't wanna be responsible for some1 else's car etc etc....it kinda sucks to pay regular insurance prices on a car that is only driven 2 days a week for maybe 6-10 miles total per week..i'll look into these companies you guys suggested

Re: hot rod/race car insurance

You can insure a race car, but it only covers theft, accidents while towing, and other non-driving related accidental damage or loss. IOW, it won't cover racing accidents or street use. It sounds like you want to insure it for driving back and forth to the track. If that's the case, just buy regular insurance. It will cover accidents while on the roads, but not the track.
