I wish I was not out of town or I would come. I would bring my fiance's 99 V6 and be smack talking to the ricers.

As for my car, done for the year with it. Going to buy some all out racing heads over the winter and really research a cam for it.

I cant go now. I think my tranny is dead.

It seemed fine last weekend when I went to the track. Then this week I was going to go yday. Get in and start driving and it shifts really lazily. Punch it and the revs go up but doesnt move or has a bigtime hesitation. Then it got to redline and didnt shift. It even does this just putsing around. pissing me off. could it be the TC?

it could be the tc, but first things first. flush the trans and change the fluid and put in a new filter and see if that doesnt solve the problem...

anything beyond that could be a number of things, but certainly start there...

I would say it is the tranny going bad. It is very common for the trannies to fail, not the TC. Just look the number of miles on it and that your making more power than stock. It takes the toll on it.

Well it only has 50k on it and I ahve been running a tranny cooler for about 2 years which I thought would help. I will change the fluid and filter next week just to be sure. I wish it was the TC b/c I was planning on one this winter anyway.

If it is for sure the tranny, what should i go with. A TH400 or a T56?

well youre going to make a sacrifice either way. th400 has a lot of parasitic loss and is heavier than your 4l60e AND you give up overdrive. t56 is going to take quite a bit of work between converting everything over from the auto. 4l60e tech. has come quite a ways over the last year or so, you can buy one that pretty heavily built that should handle your application no problem.

i was debating this very same thing when i put the turbo in...i knew the stock trans would go pretty quickly and for a while i was very close to going th400. i changed my mind at the last second since im mainly a street car and im not putting an overwhelming amount of power down yet. so far its saved me money and i havent had a problem with it at all. btw...its a speed inc. stage 3 unit...im pretty sure they have 4l60e's for lt1's as well...

I had a local guy rebuild mine, had under $500 with parts and over 3 years it is holding up...but only two of those were really racing. Many 11 second and 1.6 60' launches...not including the 100's on the street.

Look around.

Ryan,

I kept my stock converter so if you need it let me know and it's yours.

Meanwhile, I'm looking to get rid of my T-56 in exchange for a 4L60E, 700R4 or if I could find one, a 200R4. Nothing is wrong with my transmission, I just want to get an auto.

Yeah, I ahve been doing some research and it is tough to decide. After what I have read in the search, I would not go with a TH350 or TH400. No OD, streetability is very rough according to most, it weighs a ton, and the hp loss is significant.

4L60E- Can be built to around 750 hp but isnt cheap. Around $3k.

200R4- Can be built to around 1,000 hp but isnt cheap. Around $3k

700R4- Same thing.

Those prices are not including a converter.

T56- Fairly cheap especially if I did a swap with Waswa and can handle around 650 hp.

A4 advantages- use of a TC = faster track times
A4 dis. - really expensive for a race prep

M6 advantages- cheap and fun to drive, more hp on dyno
M6 dis - break the rear, misshift could = bent pushrods

The dilemmas I tell you. The car gets moderate street use. Weeekends and weeknights combined with strip use of once a month or so.

I think the main thing bothering me is the price b/c I hate doing things twice so would want the highest Level 3 tranny. I would also like a transbrake too even though I don't know what it does. i only have an idea. lol. I would like to keep the A4 but this was unexpected though and I really wanted to get some ported heads this winter. SOB.

EDIT: My goal is to have a 10 second, streetable car within the next 3 years.

Jayson, who did you have rebuild yours? Was that including them taking it in and out of the car or did you do that and drop it off?

Waswa, I saw a post in the for sale section for a 200R4 for $150. Do a search and you should find it.

Ryan, I could talk to a guy at work and see if he would want to rebuild your trans for you. He just rebuilt a trans for his buddies 94 Impala SS thats getting a 383 in it this winter. I'm sure he'll be cheap too. Let me know if you want me to ask him. If you decide to go with a t56 make sure you have a good shifter and clutch! My sig proves what happens to stock lt1s after you miss a few too many shifts (spun rod bearing)

well if you want a brake youre going to have to go with a th350-400 because they dont make them for the 4l60e's. just an fyi...my fully built speed inc. unit (check speed inc's website for a list of what goes into the trans) cost me 2k out the door. not cheap by any means, but compared to what going with a th35-400 setup would have costed me, i saved money AND retained OD and lockup converter. im not in any rush to pull 3500rpm at 65 on the freeway...
