Altinator Relocation

Well while the motor is out of the car Im deleting the A/C and want to do an altinator relocation. I do however want to keep the powersteering. Is there a bracket out there that will allow this? Brian (ProjectZ) Im pretty sure you have your altinator relocated. Which bracket did you use? Do you still have your power steering? Anyone else that would like to chime in please do.

I used the SJM kit. Not bad but it is lacking in the stability area. I only have an alternator, no PS or a/c. The problem I saw with the kit was that under hard acceleration the bracket has a tendency to torque forward. This causes the belt to become misaligned and started to chew up the front leading edge of the belt because the belt would walk forward and jump 1 rib. Never threw it off but not what I call reliable. When the new motor went in I fabbed up a small round bar with 2 tabs that bolted the rear of the alternator to the motor mount to prevent it from twisting up under fast acceleration.

IMO you can make one easily if you have the tools. If not the kit is just ok. It really needs another rear support to hold it straight. I assume any kit similar indesging to the sjm is going to have the same problem.

Brian how hard is the car to steer with regular radials on your car? Im sure its alot easier with skinnies.

Harold,

Look at what this guy did. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2108416 I would wait until you get the car, tubular k-member and solid motor mounts from me. Then you can accurately mock it up on a stand. Talking from experience, there is no car that sucks more to steer than a car w/ ps that is not hooked up.

Give me a call.

Later,

Steve.

agreed. its not fun on skinnies. I couldnt imagine a full wheel and tire. If you plan ahead and make your turns while rolling its not impossible but still no fun.

It is fine going down the track and even turning off. It gets kinda tuff driving in pits. I don't want to think of driving that way on the street. I do have a spool and can steer by a little stab on the gas peddle. Much easier to slide the tail end around than turn the wheel.

Do a "search" on the "LT1 Based Engine Tech" forum. There is a thread there showing pictures of a relocated alternator, with power steering. The "wrap" on the pullies looks a little skimpy, but the original poster indicates he has not had a problem with the belt slipping.

There is a company that was and or is making them, I'll get the name and post it as soon as I can find it.

Found it: Speed Inc.

How about this, we moch up the following:

Delete A/C and move the PSP down to where the A/C was, We can probably cut up the stock unit, and make it fit and clean up the top of the engine. Then relocate the alt to the other side ALA a supercharger type mount.

Make the pump and ALTERNATOR <- DAMN KIDS mount high enough to clear the top of the crank pulley so the belt will wrap around all the pulleys enough to not slip and a SC type tensioner pressing downward on the belt.

We should be able to mock up a mounting plate and have Antz cut one out with his CNC machine!

Option 2: relocate the Alt and rig up an electric PSP pump from an old Feiro??
