yet another smog question real quick...

took all my smog stuff out, capped off the headers and intake, also took off the egr and put on some block of plates due to the fact that I couldn't get thing dang thing to seal due to bad fitment, and I am going to get a tune, but will it be ok for a bit if I'm easy on it? will it idle ok and everything? It's OBDI as well....

the computer will just spit out a number of codes, you will be fine driving. idle MIGHT be rough, did you take out EGR and AIR? and block off the appropriate inlets on the intake?

EGR and AIR are both off. I have started it since this post, and it runs fine. I don't wanna get on it until I get it tuned, and yes all the appropriate holes are blocked off.

then you should be fine... all the AIR system does is warm up the cats for the first few minutes you have the car running. and the EGR system is to recycle Exhaust gasses back into the intake to burn off more of the unspent fuel... they both overall dont affect performance. although if they are not tuned out then you will get a SES light eventually.

You will not get a code/SES light in OBD-I (only) for the missing AIR system, as long as you have a good fuse in the AIR pump circuit.

You will get a code/SES for the missing EGR vacuum solenoid, but all you need to do is put a resistor in the harness connector for the solenoid = no code/SES. Its possible that you will get a code for no actual EGR flow, but the OBD-I diagnostic is not very sensitive, and I'd say maybe 80% of the people who delete EGR will not get a code.

Exhaust gas is recycled to reduce combustion chamber temperatures, to reduce the formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). It operates when the PCM sees engine operating conditions that may produce elevated combustion temperatures, like lugging the engine at low RPM in the wrong gear. In that case, it may also reduced the tendancy to knock, and reduce knock retard.
